I don't know much about this system, I have only just come across it. It seems normal visa free travel into the Schengen Area is being replaced by the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) which requires a preregistration and recording of additional biometric data. It is due to come into effect some time in 2024. Here is a link to the ETIAS website: Who Needs ETIAS?
In addition there is Entry/Exit System (EES) which will replace passport stamping with the collection of biometric data at Schengen Area entry points which includes the French Border point at Dover Harbour and probably EuroStar and EuroTunnel. It seems that fear, loathing, and a sense of traumatic shock is descending on Dover at the thought of long queues for fingerprinting and mugshots. Ho Hum!

When we flew to Bangkok in January they had the system of finger prints and mugshots. There were indeed queues. Luckily I had ordered a wheelchair so I was whisked to a booth with no queue. Once through that we were taken down straight to the head of the queue for taxis.
This is the only benefit of losing 4 toes.

looks like I'll need ETIAS when I want to visit the UK from next year on... I don't think so, as I understand it. At present I know of no new barriers to entering the UK, providing your boat is big enough. If you have a Schengen Area passport as I expect you do, you should be able enter the UK and importantly traverse any EU country on your return. Switzerland is already inside the ETIAS Area. FWIW: The consequences of leaving the EU came as a bit of a surprise to UK border controls.

I remember the good old days when we could take a hovercraft to Boulogne for a day trip and we didn't even need a passport.

I would get sent to France or some such at short notice. That might require a trip to the Post Office to get a temporary passport, rather than trek home and back for my regular passport..
They never checked to see if you already had a passport, so as a repeat offender I had three passports at one point.
ETA: Those one year passports were discontinued in the mid 1990s.
