Terrible yes, but murders in the USA decreased last year.

It's so scary. We kind of have an opportunity to relocate to the US but news like this scares me and completely puts us off.

I see nothing that can make the refusal to take action on gun ownership in the US acceptable. And I am so very glad I don't live there and I do not intend to live there.

Lumi, can I just say as an anecdote that I spent nearly six months living in and near San Francisco and never saw a gun in anger. On the other hand, would I live there for more than a couple of years? No.

Mark, I understand what you are saying (I think, at least) but it just doesn't suit well with me. I guess it is just the potential which weighs heavy but also the reality (I think) of children in schools pectic for live short situations. At least from the media I assume all schools do this. We do practice somewhat for various safety issues at all schools but I wonder just how prominent this is in the minds of students and teachers.
Our potential to move is extremely new so I've done no research on this at this stage so not entirely sure what my feeling may be after hearing from people living there and from a similar background to myself.

Might be nice to visit America, wouldn’t want to live there though. I am so glad I live in Australia. Here schools may have a fire drill safety. That’s it. Nobody has to practice fleeing from man with a gun.

Tzarine that’s scary, it would have been very frightening for people especially those school children. I have never heard of Bert the turtle or the words-duck and cover and certainly the only thing the Nuns referred to about communism was the anti-religion belief. How they’d try to make us give up God and we had to stay strong. Looking back now I cannot help but think what a stupid thing to stress to a 7 year old . I remember going home and asking dad what is communism and he replies “Well, if you have five cows and your neighbour only has one, you must give him some of your cows so you all have an equal amount.” Even then I was a true capitalist! I was horrified and didn’t see why I should. Dad said that’s communism. I remember telling my father if I have seven cows I don’t care if my neighbour has less than me, he’s not getting any, they’re mine!

Wow, that video was captivating. I don't know why but I felt the need to watch it until the end. I think we only ever had fire drills when I was at school. I feel uncomfortable when I have to conduct fire drills at school these days as it reminds me of the possibility of such danger and some children find it distressing. The alarm is really loud and I can't cover my ears as I need to hold my class register and communicate with students as to what they need to do. We are several levels up in the building and there are up to 10 classes on every level so there are many of us on the stairs going down at once. And if a student is not in the classroom (E. G. In the toilet), I have to leave them and hope they remember what I've taught them and go directly outside and come to our meeting place rather than return to class. Our lockdown practice can also be tough (I'm assigned the duty to close and lock our entire year group in the safe space). We usually then have to sit/hide silently for 20-30 minutes though of course keeping g so many children calm, silent and still is impossible. Tzarine, I think it is Washington DC, but not exactly the city centre. Hubby only mentioned it in passing, haven't had a chance to discuss it yet.

Netskie and Lumi -- I find it amazing that you didn't have the duck and cover drills - given "on the Beach" ! and Lumi -( this is your freindly local firefighter speaking ) if it is distressing to the kids, that's actually good - they will remember and be scared and do it right, if , god forbid, a fire or lockdown happens. And Lumi , hard tho it is to deal with, the instructions NOT to go back or look for a student are right... leave that to the firemen - who are equipped to do it.

Here in the great white north, we have fire drills in schools on a regular basis. Several schools in the area where I taught had serious fires, and the drills really proved that knowing what to do (by both teachers and students) made a huge difference. In the area where I live now, we have earthquake drills in addition to fire drills. Interestingly, earthquake drills are carried out annually in the entire community. (Not everyone pays attention!)

Maybe I am too young for the duck and cover drills? Is born in '81... It could also be that I am too old and just can't remember! Haha Don't get me wrong, I absolutely agree with doing fire drills and lockdown practice, it just adds to an already stressful workload. Someone else on my floor if the building who doesn't have responsibility for a class is assigned to do a so of the toilets before exiting the building. And I get annoyed at teachers who don't move in an orderly way and push past others to get themselves out faster or the opposite where they keep to our usual rule of sticking to one side of the stairs when going down or come to a complete stop to let stragglers from a class saunter by instead of instructing them to move quicker while continuing to move down the stairs themselves (we have hundreds of students and staff using the same staircase so stopping unnecessarily has a huge flow on effect). My students know that if the alarm sounds, we go immediately (we don't line up like some others do). I am the first to leave the classroom and students follow me. If they loose sight of me, they keep moving down the stairs and look for me at our meeting spot.

The film dates to 1951 which is long (6 years) before ICBMs. It is true that rhere were some long(ish) range bombers but the threat of an attack, particularly without warning or outside of Europe,. was was pretty minimal,
