The last time we visited Thailand (we returned a week before Covid struck) we flew BA business class. I discovered that if we bought EasyJet from Bristol to Toulouse (£25), then took BA from Toulouse to Heathrow and picked up the BA flight to Bangkok it was £500 cheaper than simply flying BA from Heathrow to Bangkok. BA Business Class was poor. There were indeed lie-flat beds. Unfortunately my feet were up against the bulkhead so I couldn't fully stretch out. The food was definitely better than Economy but nothing special like EVA.

I used up a load of air miles and flew Lufthansa. It's on the opposite end of the scale to Eva Air. Seats were uncomfortable etc etc In fact on the way back I rejected one meal as being so bad. Told the cabin lady to just take it away, it's the worst thing I've ever been served in business class. I flew with Jetstar many times, not because I liked them but because they were the cheapest. A budget airline, meals were extra, but I never had to reject any meals. Maybe I was so used to the quality I just didn’t notice! What was the meal that was so terrible? Was it the taste? Just curious.

I'm not a great meat eater but do enjoy it from time to time (especially bacon for example) and I'm a little picky about it. There's more I won't eat than I would. One thing is when I travel to less than hygienic countries I mostly miss out on it, though I did have hot dogs, burgers and chicken in Mexico just to try what they were like (yummy actually). One other time I never eat meat is on long plane journeys where you'd get it possibly twice and I'm not totally convinced how healthy or hygienic that is. It'd really ruin a long looked forward to holiday when you start off with a bad stomach and so I don't risk it. I eat and like fish but not seafood so again, on a long plane journey I avoid it.
So I usually order a 'special meal'. I could easily order a vegetarian meal but that would mean, no doubt, I'd end up eating a lot of pasta, which I'm quite neutral about and prefer rice or potato, couscous, grains etc. Often you can order an "Asian vegetarian meal" which at least has (supposedly) some nice flavours to counteract the occasional "blandness" plane meals can have. I remember flying somewhere where near me were several Indians who obviously didn't realise about this meal had to choose between the chicken or fish thing and then mine was served and I could see them looking over with obvious envy. Frankfurt to Mexico was fine, really tasty. Obviously the food was loaded in Germany.
On the return though, loaded in Mexico, I was given a rectangular plate and laid out in four lines across it were four vegetables. Zucchini, eggplant, carrot and spinach. All of them were cooked - but served cold and I mean nearly icy cold - and with no sauce, no seasoning, nothing. I took one piece of each to try and reached up and rang the call button. Unfortunately the cabin lady was too quick as I was reaching for my camera in my bag when she turned up and I told her it was as far away from Asian as Frankfurt is physically. She looked at it, grimaced a little and took it away. She offered me other things but I'd lost my appetite.

I haven't posted details of our lunch on EVA on Monday but since Mark has detailed his Lufthansa experience I shall be forthcoming.
The flight was meant to leave Bangkok at 1.05 pm but there was some holdup up so we were 25 minutes late taking off (we arrived at Heathrow 1 minute early). We had been given a glass of sparkling wine (not champagne) as soon as we sat down.
Once we were up in the air the cabin crew got busy. Now we were offered champagne. It was not ordinary champagne but a vintage champagne from a small producer. There was no tray lowered from the seat in front but a large table slid out from the side. This was laid with a linen table cloth. There was a linen napkin and proper metal cutlery.
No tray came with our meal. Each course was brought on its plate separately. This is what we ate.
Raw ham wrapped around asparagus Foie gras Puréed courgette and toasted almond soup Large mixed salad Lobster fried with a slightly sweetish sauce plus veg Cheese Fruit Ice cream (which we declined - too full)
As well as the champagne I chose a dry white wine from Bordeaux and a 2015 red Bordeaux
The service was impeccable.

Sounds like a good trip. Why does travel have to be more difficult as we get older? Are we being punished?
