Baz I just remembered this was what my mother said to me often, “Look at the state you’re in!” It was always said with an exclamation at the end of the sentence and her voice would always rise slightly. The state you’re in usually meant you were messy and untidy, or red-faced and hot, there was also the “Look at the state of your shoes!” Meaning they were dusty, dirty or looking decidedly scruffy.
I think I might start a thread and call it memory lane and write bits and pieces like this in it. Everybody else will be welcome to add their bit of nostalgic dreamerie.

Tomorrow the UK will be in a new "state we are in". Liz Truss will go to Scotland where the Queen will ask her to form a government. It has seemed interminable, this process of finding a new leader. Now it is almost certain it will be Liz Truss. Last week I saw a poll showing the country's feelings about la Truss. The longer this process went on the fewer people liked or trusted her.

This morning the prospective new prime minister said:
Liz Truss says it is fair to prioritise tax cuts that benefit high earners more
She has zero feel for what the country wants.

So we have a new prime minister, elected by 81,000 Conservative party members. Putin (yes that one) says this is undemocratic. What other lessons can that great democrat Putin teach us? Truss should obviously invade Acquitaine which used to be English. Oh, and anybody who stands up to her should be murdered.

And now the Queen is dead. A satirical Portuguese paper reported it thus: 73 year old man gets job at last.

I read that La Niña conditions are tentatively forecast to switch to El Niño ones by year end, and then who knows what that will bring, but record global temperatures seem a reasonable bet.
Wet will become dry, hot cold and vice versa I guess.

I just did a strange thing
Reading the "ventura-county" part of the link, I jumped to The Ventures and on to The Surfaris and then to their instrumental "Wipe Out".
Clicked the link and the first word I picked out was "Surf".
I have loose connections.
I am a clutter of loose connections between minor cultural trivia.
Big Wednesday and uncounted dramatic scenes shot in the Los Angeles River all came to mind. All from a culture not my own.

Nice song, and hence not my sort of thing. Around that time, commercial FM radio started in the UK and the demand for non-raucous "easy listening" music to show off the new found audio quality blossomed.
Never heard of America as a band but was interested to discover that their "fathers were stationed at the United States Air Force base at RAF South Ruislip near London in the mid-1960s". The American Air Force bases I do remember; they came, they saw, and they left with their English brides.

Glad she wasn't in it.
When I lived in Kings Langley I drove out one windy morning. 15 minutes later my return journey was blocked by a large tree that had been blown over across the road.

Jeff - that's awful, but I am hoping they are high enough up not to worry about mudslides ! I have a friend in Oakland who has madly been putting sand bags against her doors and getting a sump pump... haven't heard from her today...

Best wishes to all impacted. I used to know people who lived in Berkeley. high up on those hills. lovely forested areas, but the houses... they didn't feel that solid compared to their pricetag. Thinking you used to find fawns scrambling on the road from time to time. Hoping the bambis are safe.

From the Times:
something to look forward to in February. Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, said we needed to brace ourselves for two or three of his officers per week to appear in court on criminal charges, including, he hesitated awkwardly before hurrying on, “violence against women and girls”.

From a piece in this morning's Times:
Only 5 per cent of burglaries are solved, a rate that has halved in seven years. Fewer than 1 per cent of reported rapes end in conviction. Fraud cases now account for 40 per cent of all reported crime but only one in 200 end in charges. Meanwhile, violent crime recorded in England and Wales more than tripled from 2012 to 2021, to more than two million offences.
And the Conservatives used to boast they were the party of law and order.

I read a some of his short story collections back in the day and had no inkling that he wrote the children's books for which he is now famous. When the films appeared I was mightily surprised.
