I could post a lot more. But consider these:
Nearly three-quarters of state pension will be swallowed up by energy bills next year
That is from the Conservative Daily Mail
This is from the Telegraph:
Widow forced to verify husband’s death on video call because GP would not visit Woman was told doctors ‘don’t come out any more’ and asked to hold phone camera to the deceased’s body

It didn't take long to find another one. This is from the Guardian:
Nearly a quarter of UK adults plan to keep heating off this winter, poll finds

Then there is the NHS. It has multiple problems. This is just one:
one in seven hospital beds are occupied by patients who can’t be discharged.
These "bedblockers" have no social care home to go to.

Hoping this coming winter will be mild in the UK.
One more reason for me to be grateful to be back in Switzerland: my flat in England had no insulation to speak of.

Excess Mortality, sounds like a soviet era, cold war, euphemism, but it is also indicative of a real problem
There is an unexplained rise in the death rate in England and Wales. Starting in April this year the death rate suddenly became much higher than expected for the time of year and that remains the case in August. It is about 11% higher than the norm, and no one seems to no why these 1,000 or so unexpected deaths per week are occurring.
England is spoilt for choice as to possible causes, catastrophes du jour have not been in short supply. Such a shame they are inedible.

The long wait to learn who will be the next prime minister is nearly over. Only Conservative party members have been allowed to choose between the 2 candidates. So who are these wise men (and I use the term men with reason?
there are now between 180,000 and 200,000 Conservative party members, which makes up about 0.3% of the population.
Research from the Mile End Institute at Queen Mary University of London suggests 44% per cent of the membership is over 65, 97% are white, and 54% live in the capital and the south of England.
Plus they are overwhelming male.
This in no way reflects the make-up of the United Kingdom.

There are still people who think Brexit was a good thing. Personally I have found not a single thing that Brexit has improved and lots it has made much worse. I am not alone. There was the ridiculous Festival of Brexit. This from the Times.
It was meant to be a patriotic celebration of what Britain could look like after leaving the EU.
But despite being supported with £120 million in public funds, the so-called Festival of Brexit has fallen woefully short of hitting a target to attract 66 million visitors. Only 238,000 people have turned up so far.

This is an odd bit of news: UN FAO's global food prices fall for fifth month in a rowThe data behind the headline is here: UN FAO food price indexThe previous rise in prices took place from 2020 till the start of this year rising from 98.1 to 135.6. It peaked the month after Russian invaded Ukraine 159.7. It has been falling ever since and now stands at 138.0 For some historical context the figure for 2011 is 131.9. (2011 was during another major La Niña event that also produced both major flooding and droughts in the places that the current major La Niña is producing flooding and droughts.)
I haven't got a source to hand but I believe petroleum prices have also been coming down. This should all be good news, but somehow there is no good news, something is broken and things are getting worse.
