For those of you who practice this yoga pose, do you keep legs extended or bent?

I don't practice yoga, but I do this exercise. I keep my legs straight. Gives you a nice stretch.

Depends on the state of my knees! But usually straight.

Every time I look at the title of this thread I think I have strayed into the Kama Sutra.

Tzarine, i am keeping that link for when I have the time and mental space to read it. Looks good. I think I got confused when I saw that adriene sometimes recommends to kind of peddle whilst doing it.

Gee, I just clicked that link, a more awkward position I cannot imagine. Correction, I cannot even imagine getting into that position.

Actually it’s a very relaxing and peaceful pose. I try and do it several times a day, but do it usually as part of my yoga routine called salutations. Many yoga poses are excellent for aging bodies, working on flexibility and balance which become more important in aging. There are also many yoga poses which are more challenging for older folks. One woman I know is still doing headstands regularly in her late 80’s. I can not do many poses which require knee flexibility as that is a challenge for me.

sophie, thanks so much for reminding me bout flexibility & strength. i know osteoporosis can be a real problem for women as we age.

I am surprised that people describe the pose as relaxing as it doesn't feel that way to me. I don't like my head being upside down like that. And I'm clearly not very flexible as I can't do it with straight legs and my feet flat on the ground.
I feel most relaxed in child's pose.
I have only ever done a few yoga classes and I doh want to try and make time to do a few short ones a week. I certainly need to work on my strength and flexibility. I've been advised though that pilates and resistance training are best for me as my primary goal is to built a little muscle.

Thanks tzarine, I'm definitely keen to see a few of those videos. At the end of the day, any exercise is better than none and as resistance training doesn't sound appealing to me, I've not yet gotten started.

Three of that young lady would make one of me! Absolutely no way could I make those contortions movements. In the second video, my arms kept getting stuck on the back of my head. For every one hands back I did, video lady did three or four! I didn’t dislike doing this exercise, but I did have to remove my hair barrette and even then I was hopeless. Maybe I should change my username from Netsuke to Happy Hopeless!

I think there is an opportunity here - for yoga/fitness classes for the "heavy set" ( literally and figuratively ) -- seeing someone like that arm person... I just go 'No way" . Some demonstrators who were at least a size 12/14 (US) would be much more realistic for us !

i look nothing like a prima ballerina either but bc maria khoreva understands bodies so well & is a working professional, i prefer her now when i look @ other videos, i can totally see the flaws in form now
im sure on youtube there are demonstrators in all sizes & shapes suerte on finding them

I suspected the Downward Dog came from the Kama Sutra. Today I read:
Forget Viagra, just do the downward dog!
Unfortunately that headline came from the Daily Mail which weakens my case.

just did a short search on youtube, there seem to be some videos specifically for beginners with a more full-figured body. i haven't done any yoga in ages - for a while, i planned to start again, and i think it'd do me good (just doing that arm exercise from the video for a few seconds already feels good), but then, there are so many things i should or would like to do ...
