The British government has just issued a list of countries we can visit (after 17 May) without having to go into quarantine on our return. There are 12. New Zealand and Australia head the list. Plus there are exotic places like Brunei and the Sandwich Islands. This Green list (Green = Go) is next to useless as 4 of the lucky countries have no flights. None of them (so far as I can make out) actually allow tourists in - though Israel will shortly.
I would like to go to Thailand next January though currently it is on the Orange list (isolate at home on return). Would Thailand let us in? Maybe they will. One problem is the country hasn't even begun vaccinating. However they are preparing for foreign tourists. The Thai government has produced a list of hotels where we would have to quarantine. 95% are in Bangkok. Information is hard to come by as everything is in Thai. However I came across a list that was at least partially in English and there is one hotel in Chiang Mai. It is right in the old town, is small, not expensive and has decent reviews. Photos show a nice garden and a swimming pool. I have no desire to spend a week by a swimming pool in Chiang Mai but I am sure the security guard (if there is one) would turn his back if given a brown envelope - TIT, This Is Thailand, as they say.
Apart from a few direct flights to Phuket all planes land at Bangkok. How would we get from Bangkok to the quarantine hotel in Chiang Mai? Have the great military minds of the Thai government thought of that?
