I am thinking of a visit to Georgia for a week in mid-summer. I know nothing about the place except people are enthusiastic. It's a shame that flights seem to arrive at 4 in the morning. Hey-ho. Any tips.

No tips but recently read a book written by a Georgian.. The Eighth Life.. by Nino Haratischvili. It was originally written in Germans has been translated into English. Gives a historical background which you may find interesting.

I must find a book... who knows where it's got to, about an English woman who went out there before WWI - and stayed, right thru the Stalinist purges and all. I think she is mentioned in Fitzroy Maclean's ... will check.

we went for a week or so to tbilisi... stayed in a hotel which, i just checked, is permanently closed according to google maps... we like georgian food - had a meal delivered from a georgian restaurant last sabbath... you may like plub which is the georgian version of pilaf! rice and meat... and every other storefront in the old town was a winery so we tasted a bunch... not impressive... we enjoyed ourselves and took some day tours when we weren't wandering around town... enjoy!

I hear there are demos over there at the moment. People might be fed up with the thinning veneer of democracy in the country.
