There used to be a fad for Beaujolais Nouveau. There used to be races on the third Thursday of November (when it was released) to see who could get it to London first. I think motorcycles were the fastest (planes couldn't be trusted not to break the bottles). That has all passed. This year there is English Nouveau for the first time. I read about it a fortnight ago when tastings got positive reviews (most of Beaujolaiis Nouveau was pretty horrible) so today I bought a bottle. Maybe we'll have it on Sunday.

Beaujolais nouveau is finished. Actually, I still bought some this year because I tend to like young wines, but it was of no interest. It tasted like a common table wine. Anyway, it only stays in the French shops about 5 days now and then it disappears. You used to be able to buy it for almost a month.

The arrival of the new season's wine used to be a significant thing in rural France. They had been drinking last year's wine out of the barrel and it had got vinegary. New wine was something to celebrate. Down in the Midi I have still seen roadsidw signs: Le bourru est arrivé!

I bought a bottle of Beaujolais many years ago. Gawd it was disgusting. Ohh, it was vile, it was like vinegar!

We opened the English Nouveau tonight. It was much better than the Beaujolais Nouveau we have all been disappointed by. The Beaujolais is made from the gamay grape. When I was on a walking holiday way back we went into a café at lunch time filled with men drinking the local wine - beaujolais. It was good. I think it is one of those wines that should be drunk where they are made. This English Nouveau is made from pinot noir grapes and it was light and fruity. It is really just something you can show off to people. For the same money you can buy better from Spain or Chile.

I've not tried any English Nouveau but I did get a very nice bottle of Beaujolais here in Portugal in November. However I have been trying different English wines whenever I get the chance, not so ofeten this year as I only got to the UK twice what with travel restrictions. But least year we visited every month, just for a few days, either for work or to visit our kids, and I always try and pick up a bottle or three. Some of the English is Pinot Noir is very good and I have enjoyed whites both from Sauvignon Blanc and the Bacchus grape. Ony probem wit Emglish wine is the price..

Have you tried any from Devon, Hedon? I remember there were some very decent ones when I was there.
