haha! that's exactly how tourism started here, Voy! Brits came to the many sanatoriums to rest after TB, and as they got better, they got bored and started wanting sporty activities like golf and having fun with those strange wooden planks people used in winter, and to hike up mountains... the fools!

We've now got the idiot class camped out (in the middle of a horrendous storm) on parliaments lawn. Member of the Rent a Mob, the Woe is me Mob and the I've got nothing better to do Mob. Unfortunately they have also left their manners and their sense behind. The area has now been closed down - no buses, very few restaurants and service centres open as there have been episodes of physical bullying and targeting of those who are wearing masks and heading off to either work or school. I never thought I would see this type of aggression so openly on show here. Police are holding a line around parliament but towing companies who have not accepted the task of clearing all the vehicles parked and left blocking streets have been targeted with violence and abusive phone calls so at the moment they are getting their own way. Hard to stand back though and see them flout every law there is because they have the potential for violence and someone will get badly hurt - which obviously won't be their fault... it will be the police or governments.
I shake my head in fear and disbelief and how gullible they are.

sad to see that the anti types are showing themselves organized in kiwiland, too... here there are a few idjits but they are not along the political spectrum so demonstrations are small and focused on a specific limitation which is impacting the economy... perhaps it is also because we have lots of data:
so yeah, the idjits focus on the fact that the vaccinations aren't 100% but they're doing as best as they can...

Now they are using their kids as protection which to me is the worst they can do, we've had a cyclone through and the kids were drenched and freezing. Now the Port a loos are overflowing and the kids are playing in the mud.

oh, not having a TV, it took me your description of the scene to match it to what I saw on TV screens during the news, kiwilady. I was about to ask what had happened. Now I know and am saddened by the situation. it looks like the covidiots in Ottawa, Canada, are using the same tactics of having kids everywhere on site to stop being evicted.
Although the guy I heard describe what is happening in Canada (on the radio this morning) said that even those who are campaigning against vaccination are actually vaccinated, or most are apparently?

Annie, supposedly the truckers who are against the mandates aren’t representing the trucking industry which is over 90% vaccinated. It’s a collection of right wing groups who are using the opportunity for their own advancement. Over 50% of the funding they got came from the US ..

What does it mean when an allegedly populist administration engages in unpopular measures? England is about to lift all (well nearly all) remaining COVID-19 regulations including the legal requirement (and hence right) to self-isolate after testing positive for the disease. A YouGov opinion poll (Do you think people should or should not be legally required to self-isolate if they test positive for Covid-19?) resulted in 75% support for keeping legally mandated self-isolation for now. One of the triumphs of the English response has been the ability to follow the data and ignore the government and react to high levels of infection. So another government measure will deal with the problem presented by high prevalence figures. It is proposed to neither publish nor produce such data possibly as early as Easter, and to remove the general availability of free testing. "That's the way to do it!" What it means is that government has entered its Archangel of Death phase: "We will force you to be free!"

hmmm... so they're soon not going to test and not going to publish any more data on COVID?? hmmm... nasty!
Here, they have removed almost all rules, except wearing masks in public transports and in healthcare settings (until 31st March) and we still have to isolate should we test positive. but those around those tested positive don't have to isolate anymore.

The police have finally done their job in Ottawa after 3 weeks.. not just covidiots but also a dangerous group of right wing nut jobs. It’s been a period of time where some of them have crawled out from under their rocks and shown their true colours, flying nazi and confederate flags and upsetting so many people. Fortunately the vast majority of people here are seeing through them and not responding.

Sophie. Same here. If you have an in grown toenail it's the gummermint that did it.
Finally, because there is a huge underlying violent element the ring fencing tactic is being used and hopefully will squeeze down to the hard-core. Throwing excrement is not acceptable. Fullstop.

‘Free dumb’ describes those folks perfectly. They have no idea about what it’s like to lose their freedom. I got into a (reasonable) discussion with a random person while out on a hike and mentioned a few things about what happened to my parents when they lost their freedom and were taken to the gulags in Siberia for 3 years. I think she may have changed her mind about her stance…

I am heartbroken and appalled at the number of horrendous crimes against children and the vulnerable where those who tormented them took advantage of special circumstances around COVID restrictions.

In yesterdays presentation the UK's Chief Medical Officer referred to the rapid decline in case numbers as shown by the governments dashboard data. A little later he referred to the Office of National Statistics survey data that shows that there is still significant levels of infection but he gave no figures.
The dashboard figures are for about 40,000 cases per day in decline from a peak of 150,000 cases per day.
The ONS survey figures indicate there being around 300,000 cases per day, slightly down from its peak.
Another source is the ZOE COVID study and this is what its principal researcher had to say about the dashboard figures on the 17th of Feb.
It is a mess!

today saw this article on fb that over 5 million children worldwide lost a parent or caregiver to corona. and there were actually people commenting underneath that children lose parents due to other reasons, too, so what's the big deal, they have to learn that death is a fact of life ... i wonder if those were the same people commenting, who on other occasions go on about how traumatizing it is for children that they have to wear masks to school ...

this weekend, we heard military aviation do their exercises above our heads, here. I need to explain that it is the right season for those exercises, but they don't usually fly at weekends when it is purely exercise. So I guess there was a bit of prep in relation to what is happening in the east. Everything is too near for comfort. Europe is really small compared to any other part of the world. And nuclear doesn't car about borders. I'm pretty sure we got some radiations when Tchernobyl exploded all those years ago. I remember it.

reminds me that when i was a kid, there was a military airport near where we lived, and sometimes in the evening i could hear military airplanes fly over the house. i was always scared they might drop bombs (i couldn't of course distinguish that those were from our own army - and the retoric in our schools didn't help - especially when in second grade our teacher told us about nuclear bombs ...)
but yeah, even without hearing airplanes, it is quite scary right now ...

I worry that all the sanctions in the world aren't going to stop uncle Vlado, but they're hurting the russian people. the russian people are slavs = slaves which is how the upper class regards them... we're getting reports of groups of untrained recruits thrown into the fight who are surrendering in Ukraine without fighting!

yes, I've read that. he doesn't care about his people. he's mistreated them for a long time now. and it is painful to realise that this mistreatment of the people of Russia has taken place under any regime they survived through, whether under the tzars, the bolcheviks/communists and now the new tzars without the name.
