I know it's not the best place to be, but I'll be flying really early in the morning.
Any of you recommend one in particular?

There is a Yotel in terminal 4 which is £72 a night. I haven't stayed there. You get what is basically a cabin but that is all you need.

There is a hotel zone around Heathrow which allows free bus from the airport and includes quite a few hotels.. I stayed at a Holuday Inn in that zone which was squeaky clean, well run and well equipped for less than £50.

as sophie wrote, there are free public buses but they run along the northern road (bath out of terminal 5)... which terminal are you flying out of? that makes all the difference... if you are using terminal 4 then it's pretty isolated and baz's suggestion would probably be best...

I'm leaving at the crack of dawn from terminal 2. Saw the yotel and was considering.
I'm not sure if i can check my luggage at the airport the evening before anymore or if I should keep it with me. If I can, I could have essential stuff in my cabin luggage (and, say, the end of a toothpaste tube as well as the same for moisturiser.

As for Gatwick, somehow, the plane tix/destination options weren't any better than Heathrow, so i chose to shorten my travel by one hour and leave from Heathrow.

found that Holiday inn. looks good and slightly better value/more convenient than the Yotel. I would have stayed at Yotel if I were leaving from T4. thank you, peeps!

I'm thinking that if I check-in online I might be able to bring it early enough. can't travel to blighty to meet friends and bring only carry on.

I bet you don't leave from work, don't bring foodstuffs to friends, don't attend professional seminars whilst travelling... and especially, you are not travelling to blighty where you have to be ready for whatever weather. I think that last excuse is the best of the lot. phew.
