When you grow aubergines? Or is there another way of knowing if the aubergine (eggplant) is ready to pick?
They're mahooosive.

Put your ear close to the aubergine. If it whispers, "Take me. I'm ready," then you know what to do.

I haven't grown aubergine but would assume that the colour of the skin might give an indication of readiness. I can check one of my gardening books for you. Just feeding my baby now so can't do it right away. But my memory is rubbish so do remind me if (when!) I forget.

I've consulted my book and aubergine are ready to harvest once they have smooth, glossy skin and are of reasonable size. I didn't read any more but from what I think I know, I will add that you don't want them to get too big as once they reach a certain size the flavour (and maybe the nutritional benefits?) will be different (worse?) and they may be more dry/tough.

No problem, annie. It was nice to feel useful. And it gave me that little bit of joy remembering how I grew my own vegetables in the UK. I would love to do so again here but we have mosquito fogging done weekly so I wouldn't like to eat the vegetables as they would probably contain that chemical.

Ha ha, Baz! I grew aubergines last year Annie - they just "felt right", I found, at a certain time.

I wish I could grow aubergines as Mrs Faz likes to eat them once a week. Alas, it is not warm enough in most summers.
