I was doing a bit of research on Thorn Tree and came across someone who asked whether 3 days was enough to see Indonesia. I wonder if he had even looked at an atlas.

This is what someone suggested:
i would suggest 2 hours on Sumatra then the rest of the day on Java, next half a day on bali and half a day on Lombok and for the final day combine Flores with Sulawesi

I hope the plane isn't late and ruins the itinerary.

Ah, sounds like the TT at its trolling best.

I think it is genuine. I used to go on TT a lot. I remember one deluded man who put on an itinerary of a fortnight in Thailand with 7 different locations from Phuket up to Chiang Mai. When I pointed out he would be spending most of his time in the country simply moving about - no seeing sights, no beach time - he got very huffy.

I've been surfing around Tripadvisor a bit and it's amazing how many people want to see both Australia and New Zealand in 8 days or less. Somebody else wanted to pop over from Cairns to Ningaloo Reef for a spot of snorkeling and was quite put out to discover there were no direct flights for a distance of over 3000 kms from one remote town to another more remote town.

some things never change - when I lived there, 50 years ago, tourists thought they could go from Sydney to the Barrier Reef for the afternoon..

Son of friends (he was Aussie so should have known better) who wanted to visit us (with my ex) when we lived in southwest France. He was in Scotland. He thought he could do it in a day. This was before budget airlines and Eurostar. He was a self-important little prick who was training to be a lawyer. He sent a brief thank-you note after his visit (the travelling took him 2 days) sniffing about us living in the "back of the beyond".

i guess you have to first gather experience in traveling though, to learn what is possible, what is worthwhile ... i remember when i was very young planning a journey through the balkans in a very short time, just basically visiting each capital for a day or two ... the journey was cut short though, as i broke my foot in greece, and the doctor in macedonia gave me a cast so big i could barely walk ... i remember the disappointment i felt when i was just glad of being able to keep up with my tight sightseeing schedule in athens, and then suddenly i slipped and couldn't walk anymore ... and started realizing that you can't always plan for everything ...

I'm struggling at the moment to gently tell friends that 1 night stays over a 20 day trip through 3 Stans and Iran is probably not the ideal way to travel. They've been to Aust and suddenly had a mad fit and wanted to go somewhere different. You would have been proud of me... never said a word or indicated they were going to be outside their comfort zones as he will only eat hamburgers or pizza (probably why he has had a triple bypass and is now grossly overweight), have no wish to mix with people from other religions and only want to mix with the locals yet only speak English. The idea of covering to go into a mosque caused major hilarity and a strongly worded objection to visiting any. Will keep you updated with the feedback on the trip once it has happened. Looking into a crystal ball... my pronouncement is "I see issues"

Sounds like they may accidentally stretch their mind as well as their comfort levels if they go.

or their minds will snap shut like a snapping turtle's jaws...
but this is why we find cruises not to our style: a two hour tour in a port and then on to the next... very frustrating...

yes, it seems some people's minds aren't able to cope too much expansion and such an experience can turn them into people who are afraid of "the other". and then it's all downhill from there.

Well I finally did it. Should have kept my big trap shut but tact was never my strong trait. She's been fishing around on the net for flights and came with a real doozy of a flight scenario. How the heck she managed to do it I'll never know as I struggled to replicate it. 4 transits, 4 different airlines and close to 28 hours hanging around in airports and arrive at the destination at 1am. Her question to me was what do we do from say 3am until the 20 day (privately organised) tour starts at 9am? Yep I finally lost it and suggested she saw a travel agent and actually got some proper advice. Pointed out that they are in their 70's (not that that is too big an issue), they haven't ever done a long haul flight so don't know how they will react, his health isn't brilliant and she mentions a sore back all the time. I did a quick google and found a much better series of flights with only one hanging about for a few hours in Istanbul and arrived the day before the tour..... but the additional cost was about $300 each plus a hotel room for the night. Got told I was super extravagant. Oh - and her plan brought them home via the USA - which is a little problematical to get a transit visa with an Iranian visa stamp in it. I didn't dare tell her that I've been looking at a tour and could well be there about the same time.... but I won't be using her itinerary.

i get asked to help set up a trip all the time... my current ploy is to refer to my travel agent... have decided that to take responsibility for somebody else's trip one should be paid

Kiwi: from Iran to your part of the world via the USA? that's a bit of a stretch....... Can't/won't happen - but that's what happens when Google sorts your travel options by cost and not by visa and logistical issues.

Sometimes with the brief visit questions I do wonder if it is people who really only have limited holiday times and want to try to fit in as much as possible. It's not how I'd want to travel but I do realise it can be the only option for some.

well, no brief visit to Zermatt at the moment as it is once again cut from the rest of the world due to the very high risk of avalanche. a lot of snow fell in the mountains (lots of mostly rain further down them), temperature and wind keeps fluctuating, making the fresh snow unstable.
