the gardeners among us might be able to confirm.
Have I been silly all these years, not realising there are two kinds of swiss chard plants - one that grows really big, with a thick, white "meaty" stalk and not much green leaf; and another one that grows only a little larger than a lettuce, with more green and a relatively narrow white (or other colours depending on the variety) stalk?

Afraid I can't help you for sure, but I think you might be right. I've only seen the former kind recently, but my very vague childhood memories of the chard my mother grew are of the latter.
On a different note, my plants this year are mostly the red stalks kind, but one of them is called "candy cane" and it has pink!

About its name: did it originate in Switzerland?

Ah ha. What we call silverbeet. The old style ones here had lots of thick white stalks, the more modern (and often with coloured stems) varieties have more leaf and less stalk.
