I just returned from a fun trip to a remote corner of southwestern Colorado. Friends own over 300 acres of nothingness there, I got to camp on it. The nearest 'town' is Saguache. It is a pretty rough environment to camp in with some cactus to watch out for. Spectacular hiking and views. Beautiful rocks. Be prepared for hot days, dust storms, cold nights. Having all that space around you is just magnificent. The drive from Denver is also pretty. If you're in the general area here are some fun things to do: Visit the Joyful Journey hot springs. Great vibe, very clean and relaxing. If you go on a Tuesday it's only $10. joyfuljourneyhotsprings.com/28640 County Rd 58EE, Moffat, CO 81143 Also amazing: A Tibetan stupa in Crestone, CO called Tashi Gomang Stupa Westcliffe, CO 81252 www.google.com/search?q=stupa+crestone&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS719US719&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiY5ojv6vzUAhVM92MKHZpFCEEQsAQITw&biw=1280&bih=703There are also some great sand dunes near there in a national park but for full disclosure I did not visit them so can't give a personal recommendation. Friends spoke highly of them. Who else has some Colorado recommendations?

Loved Mesa Verde National Monument..in the extreme sw corner right by Four Corners. Going through the old cliff dwellings was magical, even if it was in groups. Our group leader was an archeologist, and made the cliff dwellers come alive in the imagination.

I've been to Mesa Verde many years ago as well. I had a similar experience as Sophie. Well worth it.

near MV is Durango - where the Elkhorn Cafe had the best enchiladas I've ever eaten ! From there the little seasonal road over the mts to Tres Piedres, NM is gorgeous. And near MN is Canyon Du Chelley -- where you can only go into the floor of the canyon with the Navajo either by jeep or on horseback. very cool - as tho it is a natl park, they control it, as they still use the floor.
