A couple of friends, or maybe I should say friends who are a couple, will be driving me and my worldly possessions back to Switzerland in the spring.
Do you have any suggestions, any anecdotes, for me?

Take bits and bobs you can munch on as you go. Not necessarily crisps and sweets but maybe cut up raw carrots and stuff like that. As you know, motorway food can be dire. Have change for toilets. Make sure your phone and any other electronic devices like a Kindle are fully charged before you set off. Drink water mostly, not juice or pop. Think about music - maybe take some but some people are fine without it. Allow time for roadworks/diversions. Will you stay overnight somewhere? Book ahead. Decide beforehand on who is paying for what, road tolls etc. Keep important documents (passport/ID/driving licence, credit cards etc) in a bag and with you. Do not leave them in the car when you stop. Some will see you as a target because of the car/van packed with stuff and know you will have valuables in there. Plus, in the unlikely event that you break down and have to leave the car, you don't have to rummage around trying to get stuff together and trying to remember where you put something that would take a lot of time and effort to replace. Wear comfy clothes and footwear. Keep an umbrella easily get-at-able. Take spare pair of knickers and some wet wipes in a handy bag (with ID docs probably). If going on a ferry and you end up being early, they'll usually let you slip on the one before yours. If late, they usually let you get on the next one but no more after that. The last thing you pack is the first thing you want when you get there.

Perhaps while having "rest-stops" one of you always stays in the van ?

If you have enough time, pick a place on route do do sightseeing. A historic site, a nature reserve, a cute little town, etc. Just one short excurstion can make a long trip much more interesting.
