Normally I suppose we mostly do a weekly shop and top it up during the week with consumables. But when you go shopping have you an idea of what meals you'll eat that week? A rough menu and buy stuff to suit? We'll always be buying the cheese, milk etc but maybe you just pile a load of other stuff in that you fancy and sort out the meals with it later? That's what I do. I scoop up a variety of meat and veg, whatever is in season or looks good and each day see what I've got left and make a meal to use it up.

That's the same logic we do basically. Furthermore, I do the breakfast shopping every sunday mornings, cheese, milk, olives, milk cream, ham, eggs and such. We do butcher shopping every 2 weeks I guess, stock in pieces and use daily. Other than that, we have shopping once a month in which we buy durables, like onions, potatoes, sugar, salt, corn oil or such. There are also sometimes we add fish whenever we want, because we like it fresh we buy it when we are going to cook it, with all the salad making vegetables. And fruits, I buy it from the grocery in the corner which is a few steps to my workplace according to my lady's daily wishes.

At home I do the supermarket shop on Thursday and the open air market on Sunday.
Before each shop I do a menu for 3 or 4 days. Then I know what to buy. Obviously if I see something special I change the menu.
At the market I stock up with local veggies and fruit. Also I buy bread because it is the best bread around. It is sliced and put in the freezer.
The supermarket is good for general groceries and also for special offers on meat. These come with regularity (except in summeer when there is no need to tempt tourists - they must shop. But most of the time I have a well stocked freezer.

Unless we are having visitors staying over for a few days when I will plan a menu then I just trust to luck and divine inspiration.

Go to the fruiterers on weekend and buy what they have that looks nice. This Sunday they weren't well stocked with variety, so I got whatI could but it is usually great. There is always something in the garden I can do as well. Husband has to buy meat for himself as I've no clue and would get the wrong thing. I don't plan meals when I shop unless there is a party or something as here that could mean trawling a few places.

We do a big veggie and fruit shop every weekend but choose our meal for the day on a daily basis. I have to drive past the two main supermarkets we use a few times a day so just pop in and get what we fancy. For the weekends we plan more carefully and go to a better quality butcher or to the fish market.

We do a huge shop once a month for all the meat (what we won't eat in the next few days goes in the freezer) and stuff that doesn't go off, then top up veggies and other bits through the month. We just don't have time to shop more often as we get home at 7.30 as it is.
When I do the monthly shop its a combination of getting the ingrediants for a couple of new things I want to try, making sure we have what we need for a few meals each week and seeing what is on offer/looks good. Also I know that we generally have a quick to cook dinner on Mondays and something in the slow cooker on Tuesdays, I don't work Wednesdays so we have something new that takes time etc. So I have a rough plan in my head of what we will eat through the month but then improvise as well based on what needs using up or our mood.

We get the veggie box on a Thursday night, we do some shopping at independant shops /small local chains on Saturday morning (meat/eggs/cheese/bread/fruit and a few more veggies for our salads if the box isn't enough) Sunday morning, Maffoo goes to the supermarket to get his weekly snacks and his orange juice. I go to the healthfood shop to top up my breakfast things, my weekly snacks/beans as well as non-food items such as laundry/dish-washing/cleaning products
