Anyone driven around Iceland on Route 1?
Looks like 10 days and not 7 for the 1,000+ miles?
I refuse to be the Typical Tourist that goes there and says "Brilliant Country. Amazing" just to piss their Friends off and be arrogant and "F uck me a beer cost me $20!"...We all know it's f ucking expensive to keep the Riff Raff out who used to Post on Lonely Planet!
I reckon 10 days. Arrive in Reykjavik; hire a car; sleep at B&Bs along the way and maybe a couple of nights in the car should do it.

I think an organised trip might set you back 2 thousand pounds....my understanding a cheap option does not exist. My mate wanted to do the road through the guts but that bit is gravel and some issues with car hire?
Looks interesting plus you might get your first sexual encounter with something that doesn't look like the back of your left hand!

I suppose a 'Thanks for that' is in order there, Wino! Not sure why; can't be your 2nd sentence!
I will NEVER go on an organised Tour apart from in a Brewery...Just not worth it and so stifled in what you can do.
I agree no cheap option but that's Iceland for you...I'd fly to Reykjavik...Hire a car (Thrifty Car Hire are there for not bad rates)....work out where to stay for 5/6 nights along Route 1 and end up, back in Reykjavik, and fly back!
I reckon 7 days is pushing it but up at 7 and away by 8 and you can cover some serious mileage and still stop off for some waterfall and glacier action..

I so hate Low Class Duck Packers... SEA is obviously the worse area but Iceland could well be some Horror Film... Why are you 'Outside Cat outside cat @wino' now?

If you plan to stay on the road #1 you can hire a normal car. If you are thinking of going a bit inland hire a off road car, that means a car that is higher than a normal one! we pulled a few cars out of some little brooks.

What about camping? Met my Icelandic mate last night and asked her thoughts, she reckons best time of year is July as you can camp easily all the campsites en route are open and no need to pre-book just turn up.
I'd love to do that trip. When you thinking of going?

Thanks Wikki but i'd only stay On Road and get to hire a really basic car - like 4 wheels and an engine?..... none of this 4x4 SUV Bollocks that Off Road To55ers drive..
Nice one, Egg..
I'm thinking of going ....July this year! ish!
I reckon 7 days should do it as you must have 20ish hours of sunlight in July so you can get some serious driving and stopping off for some Glaciers etc on the way before you feel knackered....
You up for it?
What about your Sproggs?..

We did it last year with the sprogs. Totally doable in 7 days some bits are more interesting to drive through. Camping is a good option - it's what we did. No planning necessary and not too expansive.

Thanks for that, Scicaro...I really did think that 7 days would be fine especially in the Summer Months when it's light early and late..
I have thought about it and i really am too old to put up with 5 or 6 days of Camping and would probably appreciate a Bed on most nights - I feel that I've earn't the Right for that.
Any Highlights, scenic wise, so I don't miss them en route?..
