There are very few places that offer a good New York tossed style of pizza in the Dallas area. Most of the best places for Pizza in Big D are either Neapolitan style or Pizza al taglio. These pizzas are some of the most sought after by the public, but wait a minute… there is a game changer in the midst.Mellow Mushroom is stone baking it’s way into the hearts of the biggest pizza fans in Dallas, and in 2014 they might just get a top spot on the list of best NY Style Pizza.
Mellow Mushroom interior and food examples
Walking into the McKinney Mellow Shiitake Mushrooms on the square in downtown McKinney, a person might be happily overwhelmed by the cool hippie vibes. The scent of sweet honey crisped pizza looms in the air, and a music system can be overheard jamming the days top 40 Pop Hits. With giant bottle cap peace signs, aluminum lined bar, and original hippy artwork, this place is packed on pretty much every Friday and Saturday night with both adults and children. An investigation as to why needed to be done, so it went underway on December 20th, 2014.
Ambiance at Mellow Mushroom is a little loud. A casual setting, here are plenty of big tables with families and friends getting together for some noms. While not overly loud and crazy, the music is playing, people are talking, and so the voices do reverberate off of the concrete floor. Expect a slightly louder noise level, but not a Chuck-E-Cheese noise level. For a quieter time, the bar is separated from the dining room, so those who want to hang out with quieter adults only, there is space for that. There is a patio, and they have heaters as well as next gen clear vinyl protection from the elements. The bar opens up to the outside patio dining area, and it is lovely for a see and be seen on the scene in Downtown McKinney.
Table presentation is lower level restaurant quality. While the tables are a nice polish nickel color, which adds to the flair of the restaurant, they give silverware in rolled up paper napkins. Expect unpolished silver, and the customer must ask for extra plates. The plates are a traditional cream colored plate like one might find at IHOP.
Service at Mellow was decent, and would be ranked at a 2.5. Servers wear a t-shirt and jeans, much like at a Joe’s Crabshack, where the company sells the same shirts to the general public. They are a little slow, and don’t know all of the ingredients in the pizzas on the menu. Asking for another beverage is commonplace, and refills are harder to get if the server has a rather large table to attend to.
On to the food, which is the showpiece of the restaurant. While some people are not big fans of crust, others beckon for that crispy baked dough perfection. Mellow Mushroom delivers not only a high quality pizza, but one that was voted 4 – 0 some of the best pizza in Dallas. The sauce in the pizza is a key ingredient, and their secret red sauce is delicious. With 15 different pizzas on the menu, which one to try became a harrowing task. Pepperoni pizza is a basic pizza that is ordered by most people, and features the same red sauce as most of their pizzas. Also tried was their Thai Dye pizza which boasts of curry flavored chicken, and a garlic and olive oil base. We brought in the child experts, namely child pizza expert Kai Browning, to take a good look at the children’s menu. Sneaky, right?
Pepperoni pizza at Mellow Mushroom is quite delicious. The sauce is crave worthy, crusts are crispy, and the mozzarella topping is fresh. Topping the pizza is the larger Hormel brand pepperonis. They give the pizza a recognizable taste on top of the unique red sauce, and fresh mozzarella. Crusts for this pizza are Parmesan dusted, which gives the pizza a little bit of dusted flair. Child expert gave this original pizza a 9 out of 10 for flavor, crust taste (he is not a fan of thick crust), and overall preparedness.
From the children’s menu, the Pretzel Dipper was also sampled by both adults and children. Hangman shaped, the pretzel, which tasted more like a breadstick, was easily torn apart and dipped into the red sauce. Easy enough for a toddler to eat un-assisted, this dish was a winner for the little ones sans red sauce. Making sure to try it with the red sauce, some of the pretzel was dipped for taste, but overall it was decided to not allow the toddler access to the red sauce, which was easily removable from the plate as it was in a separate dish. The children’s menu had several other dishes, and each one came with a healthy side like apples or broccoli. Pretzel Dipper was the least messy dish, as most of the other dishes would be geared at children who can eat with silverwear easily.
When it comes to delicious, the Thai Dye pizza at Mellow is just that. A medium sized pizza will feed two, and if you are at all a fan of a sweet Thai curry, then this pizza is for you. The base on this pizza is not red sauce, but an oil and garlic. The chicken is touted as being all natural, which is no surprise for the high quality this company strives for. The chicken on top of the pizza is juicy, but not overly wet, as it is grilled and curried. Surrounding the chicken, a pizza lover will find fresh basil, roma tomatoes, diced onions, sliced cucumbers, and a drizzled sweet Thai sauce. Crusts are sweet, and savory. Tasting the crust, it has a honey, light garlic and cinnamon flavor, and is sensational.
The restaurant wishes to stay competitive, so they will not publish any ingredients in their pizza. From the taste tests, the ingredients are undeniably high quality. Consumer driven, the company who is a very conscious company, will only publish allergen and nutritional information. Touche’, pizza bosses!
Since opening in 1974, the Mellow Mushroom has now franchised into a national chain brand, but still seems to keep it’s small business taste. A hard task to accomplish with most restaurant chains, pizza seems loses it’s flair when branched out to franchisees. The secrets behind this delicious pizza are a mystery, even to this critic. With locations across the country, visit one near you for some delicious pizza.
