Raki in Crete is not the same as raki in Turkey. There is no aniseed flavouring. Nearest thing I have had before is grappa. The restaurants in Chania throw in a small carafe of the stuff at the end of the meal. It is firewater that burns as it goes down. Has anybody else had it?

Well, would not be surprise for you but I drink raký regularly and love it. A classic, it goes with fish, several mezes, melon and white cheese perfectly...hmmm smells great.
Nin must have tried it, I wonder if she liked.

The Cretan raki is not aniseed flavoured like Turkish, It is like grappa or a very rough marc de bourgogne. It is on sale in supermarkets for about 7 euros for one and a half litres. I think we may drink it tamed with fruit juice. Iain would like that for breakfast.

I well remember marc from Languedoc, Baz. Very nice when added to sherry or sirop de cassis.

Wish I was in Greece again! Sigh...
MrFaz, we are wondering if we can stay at your place probably on the monday and Tuesday nights after the Swissup or around then? Let me know. We'll hire a car from Bordeaux to come visit.

I very much hope those dates are going to be fine. I don't really know when the Monday and Tuesday nights after the Swissup are - I mean actual dates. I get confused by the Swissup thread, which has grown to the length of a short novel. Can you enlighten me?
Are you planning to go from Switzerland to Bordeaux by plane or train? Why Bordeaux? Are you coming via Paris? If you are going Switzerland-Paris-Faz Cottage I would suggest taking the train from Paris to Gourdon. We will pick you up from the station. Gourdon station is 25 minutes from us. Bordeaux is a nice enough city but I don't suggest you spend time there. If you want to rent a car and then go touring after staying with us then we'll take you to Sarlat (a must see anyhow) where you can rent one.
We don't have our calendar of visitors with us. You will have to wait until we return home (3 March) before we can confirm. But that will still give you time to firm up your itinerary.

Baz, the Swissup is going to happen from Wednesday 12th of May to Sunday 16th of May. I still haven't given up hope that you and Mrs. Faz will join us. We will soon start new threads about the organisation of the Swissup to make it a bit easier for everyone to follow what's going on

Yes, I've had grappa (courtesy of a Greek guy from Crete I met in Italy), raki in Turkey, rakia in Bulgaria, and also the Romanian version, palinka. Can be deadly in mass quantities.

I like grappa, it's nice after one has pigged out on too much delicious food. Also the Turkish raki is nice. In the beginning I thought it was awful, but Turks just kept making me drink it that indeed I liked it in the end.
