Hahaha I have been wondering how long it would take for some potter to share an article about this Do not worry, Percy is very safe and I would rather chop my foot off and eat it than slaughter my dog !! Fact is, people in this country (particularly farmers in secluded areas) used to eat cats. They lived on their farms, caught mice and were never castrated. When there were too many, the farmers shot them and ate them. That's a long time ago, people were poor. I can imagine it still happens very seldomly in poorer alpine farming areas. I guess it's the same with dogs. However, I don't know anyone who has ever eaten cat or dog in this country. Thankfully... Re the 3 percent, this cannot be confirmed, as the animal right activist said they got this from the "federal veterinary department" (or whatever you call this in english) but the veterinary department says that they have never been asked and that the 3 percent are false... *rolls eyes*

I concur with HT. I've only ever heard stories of people eating cats. By the kind of people who tell tall tales. Might well have happened in the past but these days I've heard more of people poisoning cats. you wouldn't eat poisoned meat.
and that thing about the remedy - never heard it either.
But there are all kinds of really weird people anywhere on this planet.

I remember when I was a kid, we used to blame the Italians or Turks when cats disappeared. We all thought they had taken them and eaten them

I saw tiny kittens and puppies in the food markets in China. Turned veggie for the rest of the trip.

i must admit, i don't get the problem of eating cats or dogs. if i eat animals, then why some and not others (unless it is a matter of the taste of the meat or the meat somehow being unhealthy). i don't mean eating someone's pet, but some people get upset when i say i liked eating guinea pig in peru, for example. i might feel weird if i saw a cute puppy or kitten and knew it was meant to be eaten - but then, chicks or lambs are pretty cute too ...

Probably because cats and dogs are kept as pets, this puts people off. The thought of eating horse meat is off-putting too. I don't really know why, perhaps because many are used to eating beef, lamb, pork and/or chicken/turkey/duck that we are used to that. But eating an animal that is not regular fare makes people squeamish. I've tried kangaroo and venison and liked neither. Possum wasn't bad although a little sweet for my taste.

i think in part it might have to do with that we tend to ascribe human characteristics to our pets, so it feels a bit like eating another human. and we might realize more the personality differences (and thus individuality) of animals we keep as pets. though in fact those animals we eat have personalities too, i suppose, and some of them are quite intelligent. it is true, that with a cat or dog, i would probably first stop, but when i think about it, it isn't that different to other animals ...
with wild animals, i suppose the ones i wouldn't want to eat are more for preservation reasons, i.e. those that are endangered species.
i very much like venison btw, and eat it several times every year. my dad sometimes makes a really nice venison stew.
