Around 800 NHS staff are volunteering to go to Sierra Leone to staff the new treatment centres but this will take weeks to occur and is short of the numbers that will be needed for the beds currently planned. Their secondments will be around two months so they are likely to need replacing. This current response is magnificent but the problem is moving on towards ever greater requirements for staff.
Hundreds of NHS medics volunteer to work in Sierra Leone as Ebola spreads
The staff all need training in barrier techniques specific to Ebola but are well qualified to give the basic care requirements themselves.

The nephew of a friend flew into Heathrow from Sierra Leone this week. At Heathrow he registered as having a temperature. Despite this he was allowed to enter Britain. He drove home to Bristol and rang the hospital next morning. They sent an ambulance with a suited crew and was taken to an isolation unit. Blood tests showed he did not have ebola.
But it is pretty scary he was allowed to enter the country despite having a fever.

As I understand it, they checked his temperature at Heathrow, noted he had a fever, knew he had come from Sierra Leone - and still let him through.

Oh dear. Just when you thought things were starting to slow down (in the western countries that is):
New York has a confirmed case of Ebola at Bellevue hospital. It's a doctor from MSF who worked in Guinea.
Mali has its first case-a 2 year old girl. Hopefully Mali will be as successful as Senegal in containing the disease.

Another gem of a headline, this time from Business Insider:
"If The NYC Ebola Patient Sneezed In His Uber, Could You Get Ebola From Riding In It?"
Nina Pham, the first nurse to contract Ebola in Dallas has been released from the hospital. Mali is scrambling to isolate patient contacts. And larger vaccine trials may start as early as December with thousands of people.

New York and New Jersey are imposing a 21 day mandatory quarantine for high risk travelers from West Africa. This includes healthcare workers.
Currently air traffic for people coming from the affected countries to the US is being routed through 5 airports. New York and New Jersey each have one of the airports. The other 3 are in Chicago, DC, Atlanta.
I wonder if they will follow suit?

Does anybody know what kind of contact the 2 friends of Dr Spencer in NYC had with him that made them have to go into a quarantine?
This is something that confuses me. Were they with him when he started to run a fever?
For me there is an inconsistency here in what health officials are telling us and how they are acting. On the one hand ebola patients are not supposed to pose a risk to anyone around them until they show symptoms. While Dr Spencer felt a little tired as early as Tuesday health officials are not using this as the cutoff for 'symptomatic'. He became symptomatic Thursday morning when he spiked a fever. Were the friends with him then?
If they were, I get it. If not I don't understand how everyone at the bowling alley Wednesday night would be safe, but the friends would not be. Appreciate the potters' help finding the answer!

i cannot believe these ebola tips!
Step #1:Avoid commercial travel: Dozens of travelers from Ebola-ravaged regions are arriving at American airports each day. Remember that even common sense precautions like surgical masks will not fully protect you from the Ebola virus.
Step #2: Prepare your immune system: Some of the best supplements for this purpose include probiotics, echinacea, olive leaf extract, sambucus (also called elderberry), zinc and vitamin C.
For vitamin C, use the "bowel tolerance" test -- take as much (start with 5,000-8,000 mg.) as your bowels will tolerate. For probiotics, look for labels that specifically indicate live, living, or active cultures.
Step #3: Try to stay out of the hospital: Avoid risky situations that could land you in the ER. A recent survey of nurses found that 80 percent had received no Ebola training, which puts ALL hospital patients at risk.
Step #4: Start taking silver NOW: Colloidal silver has been used for centuries to treat infections, and it may fight Ebola the same way it's been shown to stop similar viruses. Colloidal silver is well known for its ability to kill microbes and even antibiotic resistant superbugs.
Starting a silver regimen now will give you an upper hand if you should contract Ebola or any other virus. Colloidal silver can be found online, in big drug store chains and stores like GNC.
Step #5: Track down these promising treatments in your market:Some of the most effective Ebola treatments are not available at every doctor's office or hospital -- but you'll likely find them within driving distance. They include:
Hydrogen peroxide therapy: Intravenous hydrogen peroxide has already been highly effective against similar hemorrhagic diseases such as dengue hemorrhagic fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Omsk hemorrhagic fever and more. Intravenous vitamin C: IVC is specifically designed to stop bacterial and viral infections. Dr. Robert Cathcart, an IVC pioneer, recommends "at least" 180 grams of IVC every 24 hours to control symptoms and bring down fevers. Ozone: Ozone therapy has been used for more than a century for hard-to-treat illnesses ranging from infectious diseases to diabetes. The oxygen produced by ozone therapy helps neutralize viruses and build your immune system.
Finding hydrogen peroxide, IVC and ozone treatments locally can be a challenge. The American College for Advancement in Medicine can help you find an alternative health provider who can point you in the right direction.
Also ask your doctor to write a note requesting hydrogen peroxide, IVC and ozone be used as a front-line treatment if you get sick.
Stop waiting for our government to protect you from Ebola -- it's time to take action to keep yourself and your family safe. Click below to share this checklist with the people you love.
