An American NBC cameraman got infected in Liberia. Evacuation to the US is planned. He will be the 5th person to be evacuated to the US.
On a positive note, we're certainly gaining experience how to treat Ebola.
With over 1000 US troops in Liberia to fight ebola this experience will be crucial.

No news about the Senegalese health care worker being treated in Hamburg, Germany since late August. I wonder how he is doing? No news even on German news sources on this patient, the treating hospital citing patient privacy laws. Second ebola patient (possibly a Belgian pediatrician who became infected in Sierra Leone) has landed in Frankfurt, Germany and will be treated there.

Update and correction. Spain flew in 2 patients with Ebola, one in August, one in September. Both died. Now one of the nurses taking care of one of the patients came down with Ebola in Madrid. It is not clear how she got infected despite safety protocols.
Pt in the US in Dallas is in critical condition, getting treated with an experimental drug called Brincidofovir.

Oy weh. The Liberian patient in Dallas died. This means that even modern medicine doesn't always have the answer to ebola. Spain had 2 deaths but patients came late and were older so I attributed their deaths in part to that.
A detail about the first patient treated in Hamburg, Germany-he was in the hospital for 5 weeks prior to being released.
As far as I know none of the western patients who have recovered from ebola are back at their jobs yet-so it really must take it out of people.
I'm really hoping the vaccine will work out.

Welle what's your take on euthanizing the Norwegian Nurse's dog? I have not looked in depth into this so can't give an informed opinion. From my cursory explorations on the web apparently there is a study thad suggests dogs can get ebola but not show symptoms. It is not clear if they can pass it on and for how long.

The dog was in isolation and no threat to anyone. Typical for spain. I hope the nurse is going to recover and i hope her husband did not get it...

That's fantastic welle !
I equip people who go to peace keeping missions to countries in Africa with material and clothes. One guy was in Liberia, he was home for holidays this summer and because of Ebola is not allowed to go back. His luggage is going to be sent to me (some of the material is ours that he needs to give back to us) so I will have to go through his luggage coming directly from Liberia. I know it's not dangerous but I still feel a little unconfortable about it...

Second ebola case in the US. Here's what we know:
-Patient is a healthcare worker (likely female nurse) infected during second stay of Mr Duncan at hospital -Patient was wearing full protective gear recommended by WHO and CDC during care of Mr Duncan (gown, gloves, mask, shield) and following protocols. -Though there may have been a breach in protocol somewhere it is not clear where -The patient was in the 'low risk' pool of contacts of Mr Duncan self-monitoring at home
This raises questions for me regarding where known ebola patients should be cared for. Spain had a transmission to a healthcare worker in a regular hospital, as did the US. Specialized facilities in Atlanta, Nebraska and Hamburg have not had any transmissions so far.

Welle - thanks for keeping this thread updated! now my worry is that with the Dallas nurse, the potential pool of infectees is huge.. since she was at home. Has there been anything about her family and neighbors being under watch now? and if so, in isolation or just "at home"? scary shit!

Slight threadjack. Last week there was a by-election in Clacton which was won by the anti-immigrant, anti-EU United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP). One woman said she was voting for UKIP to "keep the Ebolans out."

Has there been anything about her family and neighbors being under watch now? and if so, in isolation or just "at home"? scary poop! I haven't heard of anyone being in isolation (other than her dog). They did contact the neighbors in a few blocks' radius though I don't think they are getting monitored. I am extremely grateful to the nurse for being proactive and responsible. She did check her temperature frequently and sounded alarm immediately when she got sick. This will probably mean she didn't infect anyone in the community before her admission.
