I've only seen the Wolf on Wall Street and it was too long but had some cracking scenes in it - Typical Scorcesse...
Looks like American Hustle has it sown up - any good?
I'll watch that and 12 Years a Slave and also Dallas Buyers Club. Gravity maybe.
The rest don't interest me much - as Shania Twain may have said...

American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club and 12 Years a Slave are all just about to come out in France. That is on purpose of course, since the expected Oscar contenders are held back in most of the world until the nominations come out -- this obviously increases their commercial potential. Now they will have one month to entice viewers, because after the Oscar ceremony, the winners will have even more viewers and the losers will be forgotten.
As for Gravity and Wolf of Wall Street (which was released in Europe before the US because Americans can't hold in their pee that long), I think they will leave the Oscars with almost nothing. They are good but not outstanding.

Thanks for that Mr K...If you want 'outstanding' I suppose you should look no further than 12 Years a Slave?
Wolf was very good but it felt like i'd seen it all before in Casino and Carlito's Way in particular.
I'll watch all the others given time and Dallas Buyers Club seems the best as Matthew McConaughey is turning into a Great actor - a bit like Sean Penn and De Caprio a few years ago but they have moved on...

I'll probably go see 12 Years a Slave tomorrow, because that's when it comes out here. Although I must admit that I might let myself be tempted by Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, which also comes out tomorrow.

The wind rises normally comes out the day later....

Just watched American Hustle and it really is a corking film on a few levels - the late 70's is set up to a tee; the music and the clothes - and the storyline is brilliant. De Niro plays a cameo..
All four lead actors/esses play it so well.
For me, it's above Wolf but now to watch the favourite - 12 Years a Slave....

Just seen Dallas Buyers Club and it is a cracker - especially for Matthew McConaughey losing so much weight for the part - but it's still behind American Hustle in my eyes...
Maybe 12 years a Slave will wipe the board but...
Best Actor may well be Matthew McConaughey as he's just better than Christian Bale..
Best Supporting Actor has to go to Bradley Cooper above Jared Leto...(I didn't know that 30 seconds from Mars were a 'Big' Band? Never heard of the feckers!..)
I'll watch 12 Years before the result is out.

I put Her above American Hustle.
Don't get me wrong, I did really enjoy American Hustle, but Her stayed with me for a lot longer and I still catch myself thinking about parts of the movie.

Fair play there, Kate!
Obviously I chose the 'man' Films to watch before some Chic Flick like Her - some blokes falls in love with his iPad or something similar?
I'll watch her if you promise to watch Dallas Buyers...Deal?..
(I'm actually looking forward to watching Her now!)
I assume you are still thinking about various scenes in 'We need to talk about Kevin'?...a few years ago?..

Haven't seen "We need to talk about Kevin". I went to see Her with my husband - he loved it as well. We did wonder as to how appropriate it would be as a date film though - the whole ditching people to have a computer thing etc

Your Husband would Love it though - just to please you!
I'm 100 minutes in and i'm not Posting from the Cinema!....Here are my thoughts, thus far...
The OS is better looking than the scrawny 'Wife'... Could have been a great Stage Play... I liked Being John Malkovich a lot and this is the next offering.. 45 minutes in and he's already had 'sex' with the OS? 120 minutes long? That like 40 viewings of The Beastie Boys 'Sabotage' that I could watch! Is it all about Long Distance Relationships and the American obsession with Therapists?
It's been bad then good and now is good so I will watch the last 20 minutes tomorrow.
All I am wondering is how it got an Oscar Nomination for Best Picture....Best Original Screenplay at the most..
But then, I do have 20 minutes to watch...Oh, and you really should watch We need to talk about Kevin..

Oh dear...
The last 20 minutes went a bit pear shaped and the OS fecked orf and we are back to Man Like Real Woman.
It is a Chick Flick and should get nowhere near The Oscars - I am surprised it has been nominated in 3 catagories and 'Best Picture'?? I really don't think so.
Just my opinion, loike...

Maybe because there were no Asian Babes in it and Money Shots, Mr K?
I thought that the whole 1970's recreation was superb and the twist was Brilliant!.....But that's just me....
Dallas Buyers would get my vote at the moment but still have to watch 12 Years - but I know already what that will be like....

Dallas Buyers Club gets my vote.
I hated American Hustle because it was much more interested in recreating the period with the accessories and the clothing (and the hair!) than actually telling an interesting story. The acting was just a 'ham it up' show except for Jennifer Lawrence who was the absolutely standout supporting role, just like last year. Back to back Oscars in my opinion.

I agree with most of that, Mr K, but the Story was a Classic to me - I bet you never saw the twist at the end when the FBI got right and royally Fucked up the Ass - hence the film's name!
Lawrence can't do feck all wrong at the moment what with Hunger Games...I thought that she was great in AH as all 4 leading Actor/resses were...
Just seen Gravity. It's like Independence Day/The Day After Tomorrow/Alien/s etc etc. You enjoy watching the film but how it's got anywhere near an Oscar is beyond me - maybe Special Effects in 3D Award?...
I still have to see 12 Years!

Gravity was an entertaining film, but no way is it the best film of the year.
Only a few more hours and all will be revealed.

ALL Films should be entertaining!!
Gravity won loads and really was worth only 1 award - Special Effects....Best Director is a fucking Joke!
It's Sandra Bollock talking to herself and only 3 'things' actually happen!
And she gets £70 Million for THAT! eff You, Hollywood...
Glad to see McConaughey getting Best Actor and Jared Leto getting Best Supporting...
American Hustle won eff All which is poor when you consider that the atrocious HER won Best Screenplay - Mind you, I did call that above!

Her doesn't come out until next week here, so I have no opinion about it.
But American Hustle got -- almost -- what it deserved. I would have given an Oscar -- for 2 years in a row -- to Jennifer Lawrence.

It will be interesting what you make of Her!
You are just an old Perv', K2, as Bradley Cooper was good and Christian Bale better and it was a great Screenplay even if you didn't like it.

Best Film i've seen is Pride but it's waaaay off the Nominations... Grand Feck Up at the Budepest Hotel is quirky so will win feck all. Intersteller's just shite and Foxcatcher isn't even out here. Mike Leigh should get a well deserved Best Director for Mr Turner - I'll go through the List and let you know tomorrow who's going to win..

Timothy Spall will win best actor. I would like Julianne Moore to win best actress for Maps to the Stars, but she won't even be nominated for that.

I told you, Mr K!! These Hollywood Studios aren't total Feck Wits - they release many films in December (Christmas accepted) and January just so it's still fresh in the 90 year old Voter's minds... As a result, quite a few haven't even opened in England yet! Of the Nominations for Best Film, I have only seen The Imitation Game and The Grand Hotel... American Sniper sounds shite I really don't care this year who wins as there appears to be no outstanding Film. I will say now that The Grand Budapest Hotel will win 4 Oscars for the minor awards.
