Good mrning Potters. I was still asleep when the alarm went. Obviously I had a good night's rest. I was cheered this morning when I discovered the site Drive and Listen. It has about 50 cities in the world where there are dashcams as the car drives round plus a local radio station.

Annie - that guy is hilarious - and, not having been there for ages, almost the only one with an accent I can crack !

I read today that when Polish president Lech Walensa visited Britain on a state visit he stayed at Buckingham Palace. Afterwards the Queen confided to an aide: "He only speaks two words of English." She paused. "But they are quite interesting."

my random thought is me wondering if "walensa" is just a typo or if in the UK the polish ę is transcribed as "en" ... i guess both might make sense ...

I think the above ^^^ should go on a T-shirt.
When I was in Budapest I saw a T-shirt that said: Save a pig - eat a vegetarian.

Yes, he was. Then he was elected president. Thank you, Baz, I knew I’d heard that name before. Didn’t know about him being president, but do remember the Solidarity affair. I went to Poland when Solidarność was growing really powerful. I went to a rally in Warsaw where fiery speeches were made. I understood nothing except for one word repeated time and again: Strike... strike... It seemed that under communism the Poles lacked their own word for it so used the English.

I was in Poland several times during that era, and my relatives were on both sides of the arguments. It was challenging during family get togethers not to end up in a fight.

With lockdown easing we are suddenly overwhelmed with social activity. Next week we have 2 lots of family staying. In the following weeks we have lunch dates, outings to meet friends etc. Then we have a strange event. Email from friend asking if we could have his 95 year old father for a couple of nights so they could have a break. The old chap is very nice but suffers from short term memory loss. We said yes so he is coming for a weekend. I remember 2 years ago we were asked to babysit the old man who lives at the son's house south of London. We said we would and I prepared food for us all for 3 nights. We were surprised when we arrived to find the son hadn't gone away. There had been a family tragedy and he was staying in case he could help (he couldn't). So dinner that night. He had never told us he would be there but obviously he expected to be fed. I had made rillettes for a starter - a big dish - so that was all right. I had made fish pie. He announced he didn't like fish. Well, he had never warned us he would be there nor what his eating fads were. But one forkful of fish pie decided he did like fish after all. He also liked our wine. So it continued for the nights we were there. He adapted quickly to having a resident chef. He liked the wine we brought too. There was never any offer of giving us any wine. I hadn't catered for a thirsty extra person so I had to go out and buy more. I find that very strange. To the end of this little niggle. Next month we will be loking after the old man (whom Mrs Faz has known for decades) and he is very nice. The son and his wife said for their break they would look for cottage. We imagined they would go down to the coast or maybe cross over the Severn and go to Wales. No. This afternoon we had an email saying they had found a farm they could stay at - 2 miles from us. Do you think that one evening - just about dinner time - there will be a knock at our front door?

oh good grief ! If there is, I think you should be prepared with dinner that night all done in single serving bits -- starters in ramekins, one chop each type mains , and 3 individual fruit compotes with one cookie !

Tzarine, do you remember the movie where an older man falls asleep on the sand (at the beach) and his friends? spray sunscreen on his chest. When he awakens some hours later, he is sunburnt except for the word “DORK” on white skin!
