I've confused no end of Germans by using 'half.....' as a time and meaning the English interpretation.

noon, Lake Worth Fla - we are finally having our "winter" -- it's about 60F and breezy, after several days of grey/showery 60s.. there are people out there wearing winter hats. I confess to having a cotton sweater today..

yes the HALF is so confusing!! That´s why I clarified what I meant.
When learning the time here, I had no problem understanding the words, but I had a huge problem remembering the local translation of what half meant, as when I learned it it meant half past the hour, not half til the hour, as it does here.

To further clarify, I am in Norway, and as Mark says here, Finland, Germany...half means til the hour not past the hour. I´ve had a bit of confusion a few times irl with other non-native speakers, as to making sure exactly which way they thought it meant/which meaning they were using--to make sure we met up at the same time!

When a girlfriend in Germany said, "Come over for halb sechs" I wondered if it meant only one of us would have an orgasm.

I think I've always heard "half" and "past" used together. It's quarter 7 -2C calm and sunny Washington DC area 0645 to be clear.
