Kanga is a prison officer - kanga is short for kangaroo = screw used by every prisoner in every prison in the country! Shoddy - work not up to standard Dobber - one who “dobs” on you, tells tales Nuddy - naked, Shonky - not on the up and up, dubious integrity or legality.

I've never heard kanga used to describe a prison officer. I feel very unaustralian not knowing my own country's slang. 😜

I've never heard kanga used to describe a prison officer. I feel very unaustralian not knowing my own country's slang. 😜 Lumi, I once had the good fortune to be sharing a carriage with another lady and a young man on the train from Sydney to Gosford. The young chap was sitting opposite me we got to taking. He was only in his early twenties, 23 I think, and he’d been in gaol. Me being neighbourly like asked what were you in gaol for? Then realised what I had said, became flustered and apologised profusely. He was actually a very nice young man, said he didn’t mind at all, and could tell I hadn’t meant any harm and told me why. He was really very well mannered and did say he realised after the first time that money made a difference. Next time he went to prison, he had a good solicitor. He lived in Scone. He had caught some no good rotter breaking into his grandmother’s house stealing her things so he thumped him with a baseball bat. Quite understandable under the circumstances. Second time around was for a similar occurrence. It was a wonderful enlightening few hours, I did learn quite a bit of “lingo” and if something was “going down” and you were told to make yourself scarce, you did. Nobody saw anything, nobody heard anything. I am sure there was a great deal left unsaid. I did learn about rock spiders.
