The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has a Joke of the Festival. This was voted the funniest joke of the Fringe:
"I started dating a zookeeper but it turned out he was a cheetah."
Laugh? I nearly died.

this ad: "I used this simple strategy to get into Harvard, Yale & Princeton." yeah, i got my dad to donate a building & buy the coach a jaguar Before Covid closed down the National Trust property Dyrham Park Mrs Faz and I were volunteers. She was their best ever raffle ticket seller, and I had the title Food and Drink Interpreter. It was towards closing time and I was helping Mrs Faz. A smartly dressed Arab accompanied by a helper/bodyguard came into the Victorian kitchen where Mrs Faz was strategically placed by the exit. She made her sales pitch and the man asked how much the raffle tickets cost. A pound each. Give me fifty, the man said. This was unprecedented. Mrs Faz occupied herself with the money; I asked for name to put on the 50 tickets. Al Thani, he said. And the address? You better put Qatar Embassy. My brain froze. Only when he had made his exit did I realise I'd missed the chance of a lifetime. What I should have said was: Never mind the raffle tickets; if you donate £1 million we'll name this building after you. It's not every day you have the Emir of Qatar buying a rafle ticket.

One would have thought that they would list the coaches first not last. I guess that they aren't considered central to the business, unlike those in marketing, finance, HR, communications, ....

so stanford you reject me twice recently but im good enough for this $1,000 number?
"Tuition: $1000Instructor(s): Liza MonroyLimit: 20Class Recording Available: YesStatus: OpenPlease Note: No class the week of November 20 ACCESS THE SYLLABUS » (subject to change) Add to cart The New York Times “Modern Love” column, which has been running for nearly two decades, is a holy grail for the personal essayist, launching many book deals, podcasts, and even a TV show. The column’s success is largely due to the genre: a personal essay form that allows for exploration and use of compelling, transformative moments from firsthand experience to communicate meaning to a wide audience, turning life's messiness into narrative art.
In this course, we will close-read an array of “Modern Loves” to examine how they work, learn about what the editor is seeking, and shape our stories into a form that fits the column. We will focus on craft: How do you avoid self-pity and maximize self-implication? What makes a story exciting and engaging for readers? What general structure do columns follow? We will discuss the requirements of a “Modern Love” story—complete self-disclosure (no pen names or pseudonyms!) and deep examination, tension and stakes, character arc, scenes, and dialogue. The instructor will provide students with feedback for revision. We will also discuss the submission process for “Modern Love,” as well as options for other markets for first-person relationship pieces—including The Los Angeles Times’s "L.A. Affairs," Shondaland, Salon, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and The Sun—and teach you how to research other markets on your own. LIZA MONROY Author Liza Monroy's books include two that launched from The New York Times “Modern Love" columns. Her essays have appeare"d in The New York Times Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, O, Marie Claire, Longreads, Newsweek, Self, and Jezebel, among others. She received an MFA in nonfiction from Columbia University School of the Arts and has taught writing at Columbia and UC Santa Cruz."
