It has crossed my mind that as I reach an old age, to rent rather than buy. I can see the advantages.
Voy, just to mention that the gear mechanism in your last photo is what is known in vehicles as a crown wheel and pinion. There is a different placing of the pinion but the theory is the same. It turns rotary motion in one plane to that of another with a gearing effect - that of the rear propshaft to that of the rear axle.

I've cleared the dirty dishes from the breakfast table and set the dishwasher off. That seems to be about it for the day. Shall I go back to bed?
No, hang on, I can't go back to bed. In 15 minutes we will go for a walk round the rugby/football grounds and pick up litte. Then I must go to Waitrose to shop.

I had to scratch my head and think of my once was Meccano. The bit the top is a worm gear, and the pair form a worm drive.

very glad for you, Sophie! I have a slightly different slant on the possibilities to what Jeff and Mark say.
Yes you can rent, but depending on where you live, that would mean spending a large amount on rental and not have much for anything else. Also, if you rent, you depend on the owner's actions and if he sells, you might have to move out at a later time.
I do not know the options where you are, but ... you could find a place to own in which to live until it is necessary to be in a medicalised property (and immediately bequeath the property to your son); you could find one of these retirement apartment where you are independent, but there is trained staff on site should you need any help; or you could do what a great aunt of mine did in Marseille: she sold her property under the viager system, i.e. you can live in it, or part of it, until the end, but you have sold it to someone else, who will own it when you die.
Whatever you do, I wish you and your family only good things.
As for what I'm doing today, is tidy up in here and if it get back to warmish/sunny, I'll continue on the borders (or continue next week) I promised to do some work for someone else on the computer and I promised myself I will listen to the nutrition course again. will see if I can do both at the same time. byeee!

Sophie - excellent news ! and as you had said there was a bidding war, I hope you got lots more than you might have thought. I second Mark and Jeff's remarks, my mother rented after my father died, and she LOVED it - pick up the phone , "the dishwasher died", no worries about the insurance, or maintenance - just write one check a month. A whole lotta hassle just went away!

We are planning to buy a two family house with our son and his family. These houses here are typically quite large, cost more than a single family home and sometimes have yet another suite. By doing this, we can help them (they have money but not enough for a single family home in this area), get something which will be less work for us, and have built in help as needed.

Delighted at your news Sophie and while it will be difficult to part with such a beautiful property - it will be loved by someone else - and this will allow you to have the time to spend doing all those things you want to do = the hikes, the time with the grandie, and the family without having to worry about fitting in all the gardening . Well done on all your hard work.

We'll be recording the Talking Newspaper for the Blind in half an hour or so. It's coming up to a year now that we have been doing this from home after the recording studio was Covid locked down. There used to be a couple of dozen of us doing this in turn so we only did it every 6 weeks or so. That has all changed. Most of the others have faded away and Mrs Faz and I do it every week. We used to record it in our bedroom but sometimes our neighbour's dog joined in. Now we record it in our dining room.

Finally a somewhat relaxing day! No need to have the place looking super spiffy, no places where I have to be! I am planning a nice hike with the dog and maybe do some more clearing of unwanted stuff to a charity shop.

I did things I had not planned to do, today. I moved my bookshelves and the sofa and a piece of furniture. I tidied my basement as well as my living room. Now, the things I needed to do, I will have to do either now or Sunday morning... Fat chance of that. Next week it'll be.

In a quarter of an hour we are walking to our neighbouring town (30 minutes) so Mrs Faz can have a blood test. I haven't worked out what I'll do after that.

Is there public transport where you are? Yes, Nestsie we have a car and there is public transport. But every day we have a walk so going to Yate counts as our morning walk. If I have bought a lot of stuff and my backpack is heavy then I'll take the bus home. There are half a dozen buses between Chipping Sodbury and Yate. Today I got to Yate bus station and found myself in the Bermuda triangle of buses. There was nothing for 20 minutes. So I walked back home even though my pack weighed.

I’m going to pick up a shirt 👚 I have wanted for ages. When it first came out, I loved the hot pink but couldn’t afford it. It went to sale and is no longer available online, but Immanaged to find there are two left in my size, one at the clearance store 🏬 and one interstate. Yesterday I rang the store, paid for it over the phone and am going to pick it up after I’ve had a cappuccino. I will be having “Poor man’s cappuccino”. This is the shirt 👚

In about 5 minutes we are off to the rubbish tip (aka recycling centre). Then we are going to a garden centre to see what we can buy with the token we were given at Christmas. Then it is up to Old Sodbury to sit on a bench in the churchyard with a view down to Chipping Sodbury and have a picnic. Mrs Faz will have a walk but I'll stay on the bench (yesterday I tripped on a kerb so my hands and knees are wounded).

I started out to just get a haircut ...and now 5 hours later I'm home for a late lunch. Haircut went fine, but when I came out ... battery was dead in the truck. Luckily the guy with the net appointment had jumper cables. so got going. Called the garage, they will call me back. so to charge the battery a bit I drove around a bit. Then took a chance at stopped at an antique mall... oh my. super pair of chairs for my dining room, on sale.. couldn't resist. While loading them the garage called, went and got the new battery. and finally got home, famished - so eating a late lunch ( but not yet on one of the new chairs)

We went out for our usual morning walk where we pick up the litter people drop. We are well known round town and people often thank us. Better still other people follow our example so the streets are not so junk-strewn as they used to be. It is interesting the difference in litter we find in different streets. I may sound middle class and snooty but I say it as it is. The streets with poorer houses - usually council ( = social) housing - are much worse. So are the exits of schools. Why don't schools teach the next generation not to drop litter?
Mrs Faz went with her bag of discarded cans and bottles to the reycling points. I went to look at our allotment. The broad beans and radished I sowed have not come up. I met a fellow allotmenteer who had just (Tuesday) finished erecting a walk-in plastic tunnel. On Wednesday we had a gale and it was blown to shreds. He has alreaady got a new plastic cover. He doesn't seem to realise the same thing will happen with the next gale.

As usual, I will go for a nice hike with the dog and then I will take her to her veterinarian’s appointment to get her annual immunizations and a check up. while she is at the vet’s, I will head over to the distillery and pick up a bottle of rhubarb gin. I already have the tonic water in the fridge for tonight’s anticipated drink!

Baz, I find that the streets are cleaner at this time when restaurants are still closed. And I am really sad stating this. They had just started rolling out the no-smoking within the outside spaces within the train station (namely the platforms and the underground and overground passages)so there are marginally less cigarette butts around, but they've been replaced by masks.
