We left Inle lake this morning. We took a boat up the lake with many stops for !rs Faz to take photos of fishermen. They stand upright on their boats on one leg. They wrap their other leg round a paddle and use it to move the boat. This leaves their ar a free to throw out and drag in their nets. Then we had a taxi bring us up to Kalaw. Apparently this was a hill station in British colonial times but there are no colonial buildings left. We wandered round the town and had a small pizza for lunch. all the other customers were locals. I bought a hat. This was a great triumph as my old hat was falling to bits. Burmese heads are smaller so it was a triumph to find this. The woman saved me the bother of bargaining by quoting a price then immediately giving me a discount. The big problem about being in Kalaw for us is leaving. We have a flight from Mandalay to Bangkok on Tuesday. Mandalay abirlort is some distance away. Bus would be twelve hours to Mandalay city then a taxi to the airport. We could taxi to Heho airport and then fly to Mandalay via Bagan which was costly. Then a kind woman got on her phone and organised a taxi to drive us four hours to Mandalay airport four a hundred dollars. We had to ask what that was in Kyats and accepted. Travelling in Myanmar is so much more difficult than in Thailand. We are lucky to find people who will help us.

We had a day exploring Kalaw and really enjoyed our wandering. We bought a small pizza so we were provisioned for lunch. We passed all sorts of inconsequential things that you miss if you are just ticking off the must-sees. We came to a place called Romance Hair Sloon (their spelling) and Mrs Faz encouraged me to go in. The barber had no English so I just let him get on with it. He swivelled the chair round so he could work in light from the entrance but I could not check progress in the mirror. Mrs Faz says it is short but I still haven't looked myself. It only cost one British pound. We looked at the railway station then went in a park to eat our picnic. Lads were playing a Burmese tune on the guitar and singing . Three cows and a calf came to inspect us and one cow dribbled on my trousers. We wandered around a ruralareawith posh houses and hotels. Mrs Faz inspected a cave. We climbed up a Labyrinth Road which was very steep and passes the hospital which looked lovely. We made our descent and arrived back at our guesthouse after five hours. A good day.

We ate at the Nepalese restaurant again last night. I wonder what spice they used that kept us awake. The taxi did the journey to Mandalay airport in exactly four hours. Just having coffe before the flight to Bangkok.

We are at Bangkok airport. It is eerie to see it half empty. Departure boards list all the flights but many have Cancelled against them. We have an 11 hour flight to Heathrow and then a plane change to take us to Toulouse where we will spend the night. Then tomorrow we take a cheap flight to Bristol. It will be strange being back home after over six weeks away. It has been a good winter to avoid because of all the rain and gales. Our neighbour is turning on our central heating today. I hope the house has warmed by tomorrow evening.

It was a long day yesterday flying from Bangkok, changing planes in London, then on to Toulouse. People think we are crazy to do it but we saved about £1400 by adding on the Toulouse leg. Crazy airline pricing. The 12 hour flight from Bangkok was made longer because the IFE wasn't working.
We got to our hotel in Toulouse just before midnight. That made it about a 30 hour day. Our hotel is a nice old converted house with a courtyard. We have been out this morning for coffee and pain au chocolat so we truly know we are in France. We can do a bit of wandering round the city then after lunch go back to the airport to catch the flight to Bristol then a booked taxi to take us to Chipping Sodbury..

Our car plus driver was waiting for us at Bristol airport. We are home and our neighbour has switched on the heating so it is warm.

Hubby just had a giggle when I told him about your Coke bottle. That's something I'd do too.
