I'd say that if you're not confident your tent will keep you dry, you should consider getting a new tent.

I was never worried that my sleeping bag gets wet in the tent and as a girl scout I camped in shitty tents and even more shitty weather. I think most sleeping bags are water repellent. I think it's not neccesary to get a bivy sack- that's a tent by itself.

Can you spray it with the waterproofing that you put on canvas type shoes. I sprayed my new walking shoes with it and it is very successful. So successful that when it rains I have a shoe imprint in a white circle on my deck which has lasted 2 years.

For travelling I have two pouches. One can be worn as Annie described around the waist and which I usually wear at the back. The second is a small one that can be strapped around my lower leg. Amazingly it fits and does not slip or slide, even when you run. It works well for city trips when you wear jeans cause the pouch is visible under thin textile trousers.
I also always keep an emergency fund unter the sole of a shoe. Just one bank note, but a sum large enough to bring me back home/next city/station/etc.

These are a few of my favorite things [that might not be on everyone's list]
Laundry kit: Surgical tubing clothesline with binder clips and twist-ties for hanging same, gel slip (post-it note style) detergent, viscose towel glycerin soap and travel shaving brush, instead of shaving cream (no liquids rule hassle) cream-style (Arrid) deodorant instead of bulky wax-applicator Merino wool short-sleeved sweater/shirt technical base layer long-sleeved shirt Columbia PFG shirts Stretch/quick-dry jeans Hospital tyvek slippers used as packed-shoe covers Scarpa Margarita shoes (stylish enough for urban nights out, technical enough for some hiking and running, and light)

A door wedge for hotel/guesthouse room doors where you are unsure as to the security. Good for lone females.

and for this coming trip I have to find a "shooting stick" - as standing for long periods just doesn't happen any more ! This is a pretty one, Voy and it has a hidden sword inside. Just the thing for fending off lecherous old gents and romantic romeos.

hummm - it seems that "shooting stick" is no longer used for what I want... I found one ( far more complicated - but still ) on ebay - under cane with seat or such like title. These really really look like old fart carryalongs... oh well.

a squash ball - works as a sink plug anywhere. The squash ball! Doesn't work in much of Western Europe but it has served me well in Indonesia, Nepal and Russia.

We take a sink plug. It nearly always works. If it doesn't I screw up a sock and stuff that in the basin hole.

Haven't taken them traveling yet, but just got and tested Uniqlo airism mesh underpants, as recommended by travel gearhead Snarky Nomad. Excellent and well priced. They fully dry out overnight after a sink rinse.

I bring a hunk of Sunlight bar soap for washing clothes. Usually I’m in a warm enough place that they dry overnight. Eagle Creek money belt worn inside the clothes. A partial roll or some lengths of duct tape. A couple of clothes pegs and safety pins. Be prepared!

Which brings to mind the immortal Tom Lehrer song , " Be Prepared", the final verse of which is : Be prepared! And be careful not to do Your good deeds when there's no one watching you. If you're looking for adventure of a New and different kind, And you come across a girl scout who is Similarly inclined, Don't be nervous, don't be flustered, don't be scared. Be prepared!

i love my lush bar shampoo We went to a Lush shop in Bath last week and bought Lush bar shampoo. The saleswoman said it would do 80 shampoos. I tested it out on Friday and my hair was fine afterwards. Still is, 3 days later.
