Who did you smile at/to today? Did you smile at a stranger? Often I think, we go about a business, our daily lives and never really see those we don't know. How nice it is to speak with a stranger and have a chat and give them a smile.
If you're waiting at the bus stop or on the train (for example), do you speak to those around you if you don't know them or do you make contact?

I'm not going to be leaving the house today, but yesterday, shitloads of strangers - whilst they sat in their cars patiently waiting for the parade to pass. I waved and greeted people who came out of their houses and other randoms who came to watch the little parade and wanted to know more about it - all the while trying to avoid cars knocking down children, who I didn't know either!
On Friday I had to queue to get into the revenue services building, I chatted to the people next to me in the queue, I always do. I absolutely loathe small talk but I see greeting people in queues as nation building in this country that is still so divided.

nobody yet - I just got up. but I did laugh at me when I saw myself in the mirror.... it was down in the 40sF ( 7 or8C) INSIDE the cabin last night.. so aside from every blanket being on the bed, I had on: long flannel nightie with large plaid flannel shirt over. socks. a pair of soft, stretchy ( no soles ) bedroom slippers over them.. and. the piece de resistance ! the hood cut off a hoodie. Trust me, selfies were NOT taken! but to the real question.. I always do talk to people in queues , or last night new people sitting next to us at a church supper. I love it.. you never know who you'll meet.

yeah, I'm one of those people who smile at strangers, start conversations with fellow public transport users, greet the homeless and other big issue sellers, etc... really at random.that also means that those who are paid to stop you in the street to ask you questions or try and make you pledge money for anything...they always trying to stop me.

I smile at lots of people, but I do something as well. If a person has the kind of personality that makes others smile I tell them how much I appreciate it. Just a sentence, but that your smile and outlook makes my day better. I never say it unless the person really is doing it, but when I person working a difficult job I think a truly meant compliment from a stranger will help them keep that kind of attitude. I remember especially a clerk in a too busy and often hostile big city Court Clerk's office. Her appreciation of my one sentence of appreciation made my (and probably her) day.

I really love smiling at people in the street, it's really rare not to get a smile back.
Even though it's probably because they're terrified of the grinning lunatic.

does it still count if you speak to the people?
a woman carrying her shopping through the park while i ran there pushing an empty stroller. she then said she'd first thought i lost my child (which was clear i didn't, if i smile, i suppose), and i said i am just running a bit on the way home, for exercise. also smiled at other parents dropping their kids off at daycare and greeted them, but not sure if they count as strangers.

I always smile at the checkout staff at Waitrose and have a little chat. This morning I watched the woman at the till and her face was grim when she was checking out other people. Then - there was still someone ahead of me - she caught sight of me and smiled and waved. I do think it makes a difference to people's day if you smile at them.

I can get it over with for the day then.

My husband had Friday off but I was at work. So I took a picture of myself smiling and sent it to him.
He said it was slightly terrifying.

a slightly apologetic smile to the lady with the stroller that did not fit into the elevator anymore, at the u-bahn station ... i think her smile back meant to say "it doesn't matter, i'll get the next one" ...

at a woman selling one of the homeless-newspapers (like the big issue), she made a remark about the santa hat a. was wearing, so we got talking about christmas and she spoke about how she celebrated when her kids were small ... never thought much about how she might have had a normal home and family life before, so now i wonder how she got homeless or into a situation that she has to rely on selling the magazine ...
