How do you/would you react to receiving hand crafted gifts?

I think it depends. If the person made you something in an effort to be thoughtful and genuinely think that you will like it, then I think it's a lovely gesture. I'm not sure that I have enough talent to make anything that someone else would value but I do have some lovely things which have been hand-crafted (some I purchased, some were gifts). And I quite like to many of them So I guess for me, it's the intention that counts.

I have a scarf and some pieces of jewelry that were handmade by friends and I love them. I don't have that kind of talent so I give them bread, jam, pesto or other food goodies that I've made instead.

I find it ok if you are Picasso or his kids sharing his collection, otherwise move to next subject

it is a mixture of "it depends" and "that's what counts" for me. would also depend on who it is, what the occasion is, and whether it seems the person really gave it some thought. in the end though, there is no duty to give presents at all, so anything given is something more than than what should be expected (don't know if that makes sense, or how to explain it better).
oh and i find selfmade food presents a very nice type of present.
presents with photos that mean something to the person giving and the person receiving are also a very nice type of selfmade present.

Ok, seriously now, I do not care at all for presents. A crafted gift may show a person's devotion to a friend, spending his time and creativity and giving it away.

I agree with riki - it does depend what the present and what the occasion is (eg, someone giving me food they've made that we can't eat due to allergies shows they haven't put any thought into it at all). But I have received some wonderful handmade gifts in the past that I treasure, because of the time and work put into them and also because of the thought the giver put into making something that I would appreciate and love.

I answered "yes yes yes" but maybe that's because the only hand-crafted gifts I've ever received have been from my extremely talented sister so I've loved them.
Well, I also got a small potholder that my friend's 5 year old made for me that wasn't quite as, um, skillfully done. But I loved it too.

I like them generally. Even when I've gotten something that doesn't fit with my taste it's personal so I usually like even those-though what to do with them then can become an issue.
When it's an item that fits my taste and it's handmade it's the best ever.
Curious what lovely gift or hideous monstrosity prompted your post?

I have a beautiful crocheted blanket my friend made for my birthday last year. I love it. That along with the key hanger Nin gave me in Secret Santa years ago are my favourite ever hand crafted presents.
Oh and my friend's giant jar of pickled onions he gives us each year. Christmas wouldn't be right without it, he has set a tradition he needs to uphold!
I get very soppy over hand made cards from the kids

YES to food type pressies, I also love to give them ! the loveliest hand crafted pressie I got last year from my sister in law who is very sick (muscular distrophy) She hand knitted a beautiful winter scarf for me. I cannot imagine how much strength it would have taken her to make this. I hugely appreciate it, love it, though didn't get to wear it much last winter, it wasn't really cold enough for this type of warm scarf.

I'm surprised how many people said that they love getting homemade food as a gift. I am not sure how I'd feel about food. Yes, I would appreciate it if someone made a pasta bake or roasted some nuts or something but as a gift for a major occasion like a birthday..., maybe less so. I don't think anyone has ever gifted me homemade food for a birthday or Christmas or that.

ooo - I just got home made jelly for my birthday pressie - there is no way that anything you can go buy would be that good! and my friend Anne's fruit cake is one of my favorite things about Christmas...

Sure, I'm always happy to recieve hand made gifts, especially if it is made by the giver. The person is giving you not only the gift, but the time they put into making it.

I would just like to add to this thread, that over the years I have made a lot of small needlepoint or crewel pillows.. and it's really nice, because you do think about the recipient almost all the time you're working on it. right now I'm trying.... to make a mini Christmas scene inside a large Christmastree ornament - for a friend who loves my miniature house. we shall see...

I'm hanging on to a sweater that's too big for me and a blanket in a truly antiquated style because my grandma knitted them for me. It took me over a year to take a hand painted birthday card from a friend off the fridge. I keep it with my photos now.

umh... guess it's not the right phrase. you know, to explain the errors in a handcrafted item? Just like me to misquote a humourous quip.

aha - well, the thought was to have some green velvet, topped with gold lame around the bottom, and a teeeny decorated tree in the middle, with a stocking and teeeeeeeeeny pressies around it. the tree came out ok and I could even get it thru the neck of the ball , and the pressies were adorable as was the stocking. BUT I could not get the fabric to stay glued to the bottom - so nothing else would work. Even crazy glue didnt work, I don't know why - should have, plastic and fabric..

that might be a good idea.. but tough to aim at one specific place thru the neck of a christmas tree ball! ( that was part of the problem - to be sure the glue didn't land on clear wall that was supposed to stay clear... oh well. but thanks for thinking of it!
