I did not know that Schwanz could also mean tail in German. Is that a common usage??

Schwanz is the normal word for tail in German. Any other use is 'colloquial'.

Ah, I only know the colloquial meaning. My German language education obviously took a little detour and missed the everyday meanings!

hehe well i suppose unless you have a lot to do with animals, the colloquial meaning can be more useful in daily life ...

I remember a few years ago the giraffe's tail broke off at Berlin's Legoland (or whatever the place is called, a small indoor Legoland thing). There was an official press release in German about how the giraffe's tail would be rebuilt and children were invited to come and help rebuild the giraffe's tail. All good and well, but the news ended up on the internet in a faulty English translation by a translator who thought of some other meaning of 'Schwanz', so in official news sites there were stories about children being invited to help build a giraffe penis.

ha, just thought of this thread today - was speaking to a. the other day about contagious and non-contagious deceases, so when she got sick, she asked me: "Hab ich was anders gestecktes? Was ganz dolles gestecktes?"
