So I'm moving desks, back to a window seat (hurrah!), and having to clear some of the stuff left by the previous occupant, a nice older Romanian lady.
The funny thing is you can tell she was raised in the communist era- she has such a stockpile of calc pads, writing pads (half dozen of each) and even regular sheet paper. I'm trying to get it all back to the stationary cabinet.

Heh. Our GM briefly had an assistant - she found about a dozen writing pads in his office when she went to put it in order the first time. She decided her role was to keep him to no more than 2 active pads at a time - meaning they couldn't be buried under other papers and lost track of.

While sorting through the stuff that XBF left here, I found a box of stuff from his old roommate. From over a year ago when they were sharing a house. He went traveling and never returned. Seems to be a lot of that going around. Anyway, it was mostly personal papers, photos, magazines, OTC drugs, stuff like that. There were also five notebooks, three of them completely unused. I kept those and a few pens, the rest went in the trash.

Oh I don't think this was hoarding, or even using five pads/ notebooks in parallel (both of which I've done). This was learnt from hard lessons that a notebook could take six months to arrive through the communist purchasing office.
I recall similar stories when western companies took over east European companies and found them stockpiling everything everywhere, money no object.

I will confess to having a notebook addiction - I have so many here I seriously don't need to buy a new one for years, but then I see one that is just perfect....

This was learnt from hard lessons that a notebook could take six months to arrive through the communist purchasing office. This is understandable and similar to a friend's father who came from India at the age of nine with his family. They were very poor, never had enough food and were always hungry. Many years later and with adult children, whenever he or his family cooks, there is always way too much food, enough to feed an army and they press their guests to take food home with them. The remembrance of childhood hasn't left them.
